U9 Cougars draw comfort from reverse fixture - and refuse to roll over for the Rovers

13 December 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 2 - 2 away draw with Lymm Rovers JFC U9 (12/12/2009)

Cougars had an early chance to get even with Lymm after last weeks defeat and started spritely enjoying most of the first third. Passing football was what was asked for by the manager and that is exactly what he got, Cougars played some beautiful football and Lymm looked shell shocked. Everyone played their part and they went ahead with a well crafted goal from Will’s trusty left foot. Lymm had few chances and Martin was on form in the Cougars net to stop anything that got past Ben, Luke and Joe in defence. Neeki and Freddy controlled the midfield and Will worked hard up front.

The second third Cougars slacked off and all though they played some excellent passing football they allowed a hard working Lymm side back into the game, Lymm scored through a rare defensive error squaring the game up. Cougars stepped up a gear and pushed hard to restore their deserved lead but Lymm broke away and scored another goal against the run of play leaving the Cougars demoralised at the break

A strong break team talk to lift the Cougars was needed and that’s exactly what they got, they went out for the last third in good spirit knowing that as long as they carried on playing their football with the same attitude and commitment they had shown in the first two thirds then they will win more games than they lose, and if they lose then it will be to a very good side. They set off like a train and were unlucky not to score from three successive corners, Harry Bennett on up front for Will chased every ball and caused no end of problems for Lymm’s defence, Neeki and Freddy worked well in the middle supported by Ben and Joe up the flanks and Luke was the coolest player on the pitch cleaning up Lymm’s long ball tactics. Lymm did manage a couple of excellent efforts on the break but Martins goal keeping was brilliant. Cougars got the goal they deserved when Neeki hit a twenty yard screamer that looked destined for the upright, Freddy was on to it like a shot and steered it in past the stranded keeper. With seven minutes to go Cougars brought Luke off from defence and put Will on up front to try to win the game, although they dominated a very good Lymm side for the last period they just could not find a winner and had to settle for a draw.

MOTM
This was the hardest decision of the day all the Cougars players deserved this accolade, but although Martin did not have a lot to do when he was called upon he made two or three match changing saves which gave the rest of the team the confidence to play attacking football.
