Henbury & Broken Cross hunted down! - U-11 Jaguars cruise to 9-0 win

7 December 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Jaguars 9 - 0 home win against Henbury & Broken Cross U11 (05/12/2009)

The morn was cursed by Eurus (the Greek god of the east wind) and the players were tormented by a sticky pitch that grabbed at the ankles, but players, coaches and parents alike stood tall in studded boots, training shoes and fur lined Hunters to watch a league match clash between the top and bottom teams.

The Jaguars welcomed Henbury & Broken Cross JFC to their home pitch at Jim Evison Playing Fields. Chilled to the bone, the Jaguars and Henbury each countered with a fiery warm up session before battle commenced. Referee, Oliver Nolan, inspected the pitch and declared the surface fit for play.

Finlay took the green shirt, whilst in the absence of sick bed Ted, Hector lined up in the defence with Charlie, Tom and Neil. Jamie, TJ and Natty graced the midfield and Kieran, Sam and Connor formed the attack. Will and Brendan strained at the leash from the sidelines and waited in readiness to play their part.

The shrill of the whistle saw Henbury commence play and they immediately pushed into Jaguar territory, but the Jaguars responded in typical fashion with firm tackling and the football flowed from end to end. Henbury’s early central attacks were smothered by Tom and Hector and some punchy balls to TJ were spread left and right to Jamie and Natty. Sam, Connor and Kieran were eager to deliver the first blow but Henbury defended well and their 'keeper showed some good handling to deny a goal “early doors”.

The Jaguars then changed gear and a tenacious and somewhat daring run up the right wing by Connor resulted in a powerful drive that was well saved, but the clearance resulted in disaster for Henbury as a shot rebounded off their own player and nestled in the corner of the old onion bag; 1-0 to the Jaguars and the home crowd rejoiced.

Play resumed, Henbury tried to counter but Charlie gathered the ball, left-footed to Jamie who squared to TJ; silky to say the least. TJ threaded the ball to Neil who saw an opening; he accelerated and moved audaciously through midfield before a pass saw the ball pushed out for a corner. Jamie lofted a glorious ball into the box and Sam slotted the ball into the goal to make it 2-0; “the boy done well” was the cry from the crowd.

Henbury pushed and a rare attack saw Finlay gather in comfortable style. A quick drop kick found Jamie whose feet caressed the length of the left wing before feeding the tricky feet of Kieran and a shot whistled around the outside of the post. The Jim Evison crowds gasped with delight.

The Jaguars continued to push and Henbury endeavoured to counter attack. Tom, Neil, Hector and Charlie frustrated Henbury’s strikers. Then, Hector brushed the ball to midfield, TJ gathered and fed Natty, a subtle pass to Connor found his right foot and Connor’s deep cross was met by Sam on the goal line to side foot home for his second; it was 3-0.

Henbury restarted play but the Jaguars stole the ball, Jamie ran from midfield and passed to Sam who calmly picked his spot for his hat-trick; it was 4-0. The Jaguars were relentless and a corner ensued. Charlie pushed up from defence and the corner was met with a powerful left footed volley that rifled just wide. Shortly after, TJ was injured and Will entered the play. Will was immediately involved and his great strike was well saved by the Henbury keeper.

Henbury continued to defend well, but just before half time a neat ball from Jamie found Sam who passed to Connor, Connor struck and the ball hit the net to make it 5-0 by half time.

“Football’s a game of two halves” and so the second half began with a radical change. Henbury have taken some beatings this season and rather than inflict more confidence sapping misery on their enthusiastic players (after last season’s experience the Jaguars' know what it’s like …!) it was agreed between the Managers and referee to play the second half as a 'friendly'.

This meant that the half time score would stand as the final score, the Henbury players could hopefully enjoy playing the game in the second half, and the Jaguars could experiment with changes to players’ positions; this gave each player an appreciation of the challenges associated with each other’s playing positions. Finlay (the keeper) became a striker, defenders moved to midfield and strikers moved to defence. Hector took the nets and Brendan replaced Kieran.

The Jaguars kicked off and continued as they did in the first half by dominating the play. A brisk ball out of defence to Finlay saw him run (akin to the great Usain) from half way to score with ease; it was 6-0 and the crowd celebrated with an early Christmas conger.

Connor, Brendan, Charlie and Jamie provided a rigid defence, Tom, Will and Natty played a fluid midfield and Fin, Neil and TJ provided an effective strike force. Tom ran from midfield, up the left wing and left four of Henbury’s players in his wake, a few minutes later a pass from TJ found Tom again and he struck a sweet shot to make it 7-0. It was only a matter of minutes later that Natty passed to Connor who then passed to Sam who struck with precision to make it 8-0.

The Jaguars continued to work hard and some splendid play from Neil found TJ who effortlessly rattled the back of the Henbury net to make it 9-0. Game over.

Another great performance from the Jaguars; another clean sheet, a competitive display from midfield and a lightning strike force. A great big pat on the back for the boys and coaches who continue to remain dedicated in the difficult early winter conditions. Henbury should also be congratulated for their efforts.

Goalscorers: Match ball Sam (4), Tom (1), TJ (1), Finlay (1), Connor (1), Own goal (1)

GBK Man of the Match; Sam -another week, another hat-trick, and 22 goals scored already this season. Sam provides an extra dimension to the team. He has pace, balance, he's fearless in the challenge, and he has the poacher's instinct to follow the ball into the net. If Sam could now learn to use his left foot, especially to pass the ball, the team would benefit even more. It's not just for standing on Sam -use it!
