21 November 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Jaguars 3 - 2 home win against AFC Partington U9 (21/11/2009)
After last week’s display of movement and passing, the Jaguars supporters were hoping for another helping of excitement to warm them up on a rather cold and miserable morning. The boys did not want to disappoint but came up against one of the strongest opponents of the season with AFC Partington. Harry W started off well from the whistle taking the ball up the field but Partington , despite a good clearance from Steph, pushed forward and opened the scoring with a shock goal. The Jaguars fought back strongly with Robbie and Harry W both having chances but it was Harry B and Sam who kept Partington within reach with strong tackling and solid defending. Just before the whistle, Oliver kicked the ball upfield to Harry W who clipped through to Robbie and a mad goal mouth scramble followed but the ball would not fall for a Jaguars attacker and the first period ended with Partington one goal up.
First Period: Jaguars 0 – Partington 1
Another strong start lifted the Jaguars supporters, Harry W made a great cross but no one was in the box to put it away, Harry B then blocked what looked like a promising Partington attack but they followed this up with a second goal. The Jaguars were two down and were facing their first defeat of the season. How would they react to this? Well, it didn’t take long! Harris did some excellent work around the box and passed to Steph who turned, swerved then curved the ball into the back of the net to halve the gap. Mark made some changes soon after and Josh made an immediate impact with some good dribbling and passing then Harry W battled through a number of tackles and shot just wide. From the goal kick, Robbie lobbed the ball back over the goalie to level the scoring and send the home crowd wild. Josh then ran past man after man with an amazing rush for goal and his shot brought a save from the Partington keeper. Harry W had a brace of shots saved and ‘brickwall’ Sam didn’t let much through in defence so the end of the second period ended with plenty of excitement but without further goals.
Second Period: Jaguars 2 – Partington 2
The Jaguars are getting a reputation for getting stronger as the match goes on and so it was again today. James had only just come on the pitch when he got himself into a great position on the right, having then brought the ball into the box he unselfishly made a pin point pass to Robbie who finished off a great move with a shot past the keeper. It was great to see James and the team celebrating a goal that had seen the Jaguars fight back from a two goal deficit to take a deserved lead. James then forced a corner but Partington broke back only for Kieran to break up the attack. Robbie had a good chance and Steph took another of his stunning corners but the resulting volley went just wide. Partington put some pressure on and Oliver had to come out well to clear then made a good save. Sam remained powerful in defence and when Harry B came back on for an injured Steph he too helped the team soak up the Partington pressure and they ran out of time and the game ended with another victory for the Jaguars.
Final score@ Jaguars 3 – AFC Partington 0
This win was especially pleasing as it showed the boys can battle it out and prove the saying ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going’! It was a real team performance that got the result and man of the match was given to ‘brickwall’ Sam as his battling kept the Jaguars in the game when Partington were at their most dangerous.
