Cougars fail to slay the Dragons - but enjoy a great game despite the elements

14 November 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 2 - 3 home defeat to Unicorn Athletic JFC U9 Dragons (14/11/2009)

Not the result Cougars wanted on a wet muddy and windy pitch which stifled the Cougars passing game; although as the saying goes “it’s the same for both teams”.

Cougars started spritely and for the first third they played some lovely football. The starting line up of Martin, Ben, Luke, Olivia, Freddy, Neeki and Will went about their business in calm and confident way, but for the Unicorn keeper and some desperate defending, town should have been three up in the first third. The Cougars did manage to find the net with an excellently executed corner, Neeki gave the short corner signal and Will sprinted in to receive the ball, he beat one man and passed the ball out to Neeki who also beat one man but was blocked by another defender, Ben got himself into a great position square of Neeki drawing the defender towards him leaving Neeki just enough room to take it past the defender and smash it into the Dragons net.

The second third Dragons had the wind behind them and made the most of it, Cougars made three changes with Joe, Charlie and Harry replacing Neeki, Freddy and Will. Wind assisted the Dragons pushed hard for an equaliser and managed to break down the dogged Cougars defence on two occasions both were long speculative shots which left Martin no chance once the wind picked the ball up. Even with the wind the cougars still managed to press Dragons back with Harry working hard against the odds up front.

Cougars won the toss in the last third and elected to play with the wind behind them, two changes saw Neeki on for Olivia and Will on for Harry. The cougars were on top for most of the last third and looked good for a win if they could convert the chances they were making. Dragons had other ideas and against the run of play scored with a great shot from their number eight. Cougars now threw everything they had at the Dragons; Will was unlucky from thirty yards when the keeper saved to his left.

Freddy back on for Joe looped a shot only to hit the crossbar and bounce down onto the goal line, Cougars claimed it crossed the line but the referee could not have possibly give a goal from where he was. Shots from Neeki and Charlie were dealt with comfortably by the Dragons keeper, then Ben hit a goal ward shot that looked to have finally beaten him only to hit a defenders arm, although it was unintentional the referee had no choice but to award a penalty to the Cougars, after the usual debate on who should take it Will dispatched it high and to the keepers left.  Cougars now pushed hard for an equaliser but with time against them they just could not level this game.
