Third time unlucky for the U9 Cougars - Timperley Villa break the deadlock

19 October 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 2 - 3 home defeat to Timperley Villa JFC U9 Panthers (17/10/2009)

Cougars were at full strength today and looking great in their new hoodies and coats but they had a real test against their nemesis Timperley Villa for the third time in three weeks, so far this fixture had produced two hard fought draws, could the cougars go one better and take all three points?

Cougars came out of the blocks like Usain Bolt and Timperley must have wondered what the Cougars had eaten for breakfast The starting line up of Martin, Ben, Luke, Olivia, Neeki, Charlie and Will were moving the ball well and desperately unlucky not to be three up in the first five minutes. Will peppered the Timperley Goal with a series of strikes from all angles Timperley’s keeper made an excellent save pushing the ball away to safety for a Cougars corner. From the corner Neeki hit an hard low shot goal ward which rebounded off a Timperley defender to Ben who had positioned him self on the edge of the box, he hit it right footed first time and it screamed toward the goal skimming the wrong side of the crossbar taking a coat of paint with it.

Another slick move involving Olivia Charlie and Neeki was thwarted with a last ditch tackle as it looked like Cougars must score. Cougars were now in total control of this game when a desperate clearance from the Timperley’s defence caught the Cougars defence napping and against the run of play Timperley scored the opening goal. The shell shocked Cougars now had regain their composure to come from behind, but truth be known they were lucky to get to the break only one down.

15 minutes: Wilmslow Town Cougars 0 Timperley Villa 1

Cougars rang out the changes with Joe, Freddie and Harry on for Luke, Charlie and Will. Timperley had now woke up and we had a mountain to climb, to be fair Timperley had most of the early possession and tested Martin with some excellent pressure, after five minutes Olivia who had done an excellent job on Timperley’s number 11,  had to come off and Luke went back into the centre of defence. Luke started to control the Timperley onslaught and pass the ball out from the back. Neeki and Freddie were working hard and after a good move down Cougars right Harry found space and steered a lovely placed shot into the bottom left corner of Timperley’s net 1-1.

Both sides now looked a little nervous and the game could now go either way, a speculative cross from Cougars left, bounced off attackers and defenders alike found its way into the Cougars net 1-2. We have been here before but this time Cougars had become seven individuals instead of a team, and although man for man Cougars are as good if not better than Timperley they were not playing well. Timperley caught Cougars off guard, the defence gave away a free kick, Timperley made no mistake and smashed the ball passed Martin giving him no chance what so ever, even the home crowed sportingly applauded as it really was a fabulous goal 1-3.

30 minutes: Wilmslow Town Cougars 1 Timperley Villa 3

After a stern word about team work the Cougars took to the field with a real mission, and although they were not firing on all cylinders they at least showed signs of what a good team they can and will become, they passed the ball and worked for each other off the ball. Five minutes in Charlie picked the ball up in the midfield beat his man and played a lovely one to with Neeki which took out all but one of Timperley’s defence, Charlie then slipped the ball to Will who had got himself goal side of the last defender and blasted the ball inches wide of the goalkeepers left hand post.

All of a sudden Cougars started to believe the could get something out of this game,  Joe came off from defence Harry came back on up front playing a 2-2-2 formation and although they were short of numbers at the back Ben and Luke mopped up all Timperley could muster, Neeki and Charlie were working extra hard to support the defence and to get involved in the attacking play, and although there was a rather large gap between the midfield and the forwards (something that needs tweaking in training)  Cougars eventually broke the Timperley defence down when Will slotted the ball home with three minutes left. Cougars now pushed hard for an equaliser and had most of the ball, but Timperley defended well leaving the Cougars tasting defeat for the first time.
