Fun in the Sun for U13's - but no lazing around

18 October 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 4 - 0 home win against Woodhouse Park JFC U13 Blues (18/10/2009)

Today’s match was fun to watch from the side lines and looked as though it was fun for the boys also. The final score could have reflected a larger goal difference since most of the pressure and shots-on-goal came from Town, but Isaac did well to keep a clean sheet.

The start seemed a little scrappy with the ball finding it difficult to see land; but Town settled after the first 5 minutes showing more ground control and forcing a couple of corners – the second of which was pounced on by ‘G’ who came tantalisingly close to opening the score line but for the tip of the goalie’s fingers pushing the ball over the cross bar. This was the first of a number of good saves from the Woodhouse No.1.

Brad kept the pressure on in the middle of the crowd outside the box and demonstrated his intentions by belting the ball – a little too high the first time - and over the goal. Fordy was showing his usual ferocity down the right wing and Deano, following an exciting break, took a long shot which found itself in the left side netting instead of the left corner. A goal had to be on its way !   It took the defence to force the field towards the opposition’s goal and a neat lift from Barto saw the ball fall nicely to Boyley who coolly collected it and slammed it into the back of the net (1-0). Not much the goalie could do with that one.

The pressure was maintained and Pete nearly scored another after some excellent mid-field team work. ‘Cruncher’ was showing fierce conviction at right back and wouldn’t let anything past him. Somehow the opposition were awarded a free kick not far from the Town’s goal but it came to nothing. Dan had been working hard up front and unfortunately found himself off-side a few times, or shooting just wide – but all the time causing problems for the opposition’s defence. A close miss by Dan saw a defender recover the ball only for it to be stolen from him by Brad who bulldozed through another defender to unleash a smash that the goalie could only hear as it hit the netting (2-0).

Fordy then set up Dan again who lobbed the goalie and then watched the ball bounce wide over the back line. As the end of the first half was closing in, Woodhouse managed to give Isaac some work to do and he showed us he was well awake by safely dealing with a couple of direct shots. The response was some more quick play by the mid-field resulting in a pass to Pete who crossed to Deano who slotted the ball in from the left for the third goal (3-0). The end of the half came shortly afterwards – but not before Woodhouse had forced their first corner which was confidently cleared by James, and Isaac had put stop to another attempted come-back by the opposition.

The second half was no less exciting, with each Town player continuing to show their individual talents and commitment.  Ollie Mehta started for Dan and the Town pressure continued. Again the defence forced forward and Jordi found himself with the ball outside the box, and with excellent aim almost lobbed the keeper – who just managed to extend his fingers and knock it out wide. Fordy shortly afterwards shot just wide of the goal mouth. Owain was then brought on for ‘G’, and Benno for James (who was still limping slightly after yet another of his great tackles). The game settled for a while with mostly Town possession.

‘G’ was then brought back to give Brad a well-earned rest, and Dan was brought on for Pete – but not before Pete made yet another good effort on goal. James was brought back for Deano just in time to provide a corner which in spite of a good save by the goalie was almost bullied in by Ollie Mehta on the re-bound. Another of James’ corners was just touched over the bar by Owain who couldn’t quite lift himself above the opposition’s defence. Dan kept the pressure on, but the Woodhouse defence were good at forcing him off-side by this stage of the game.

Owain, James, Dan and Fordy linked up well only to see another shot go wide.  James then finding the ball, decided to run it single handed down the left of the field, past a defender and belt it straight at goal – a good shot requiring a good save. The resulting corner saw Owain’s head again, dive through the defence, this time at a lower level and finding the target convincingly (4-0). The opposition found it hard to respond for the rest of the half although Isaac made sure that he never lost concentration and dealt well with any attempt to spoil the clean sheet.

Player Profiles

Isaac Bass

Showed good alertness & pace of his line throughout the match, dealt with every long range shot well & put good length on every kick.

Jordi Garner
Man of Match performance, won every tackle & showed good awareness with a range of short and long passes came close to scoring with a long range screamer that the keeper could only fend off for a corner.

Raife Copp Barton
A true captains performance won everything in the air and on the ground and commanded his defences line well.

Olli Barton
A faultless display alongside Raife that ensured the only shots the opposition had were from well outside the box. Spent last 10 minutes in net, but had little to do.

James Lawton
Another battling performance, apart from winning every tackle, showed excellent vision with his passing & almost capped off a great weekend in the Lawton household with a memorable solo goal. But he left that honour to his Dad, who won his first solo Alderley Edge golf title after 7 years of trying !!!.

Oli Ford
Oli back to his best, never stopped running & battling for every ball & came close to scoring with a couple of great efforts.

George Todd
Another customary “G Force” performance, totally dominating midfield and forcing the keeper to pull off a fantastic save to prevent him scoring with a great long range effort.

Bradley Jackson
Responded to his managers demands for a more intense performance. Scored a magnificent solo long range goal and along with G totally bossed the midfield.

Deano Musa
Another solid performance on the left flank. Put in some quality crosses and showed great desire to get on the end of Pete’s cross to score.

Dan Miller
Could easily have scored another hat trick today. Was unlucky to find the opposing keeper in such great form. Forming a great partnership with Pete as the two terrorised
the opposing defence in the first half.

Peter Boyle
Another fine all round performance by Pete, who is now playing with greater belief in his own ability. Displayed great technique to score the first goal & loads of determination to set Deano up for the 3rd.

SUBS

Ol Mehta
Had a great second half & was unlucky not to score today, was a constant threat to the Woodhouse defence.

Bennett Harris
Added pace to the defence when he came on as a second half sub, firstly at left back & then when switched to centre half. Won every challenge & is unlucky that due to the form of the defence that he is not starting more matches.

Owain Davies
Best performance of the season and helped keep the forward momentum when coming on, in the second half. Showed great bravery to score with a diving header.
