18 October 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 3 - 3 home draw with Plumley (18/10/2009)
With the return of some of the injured squad, Wilmslow were looking to put the disappointment of the Prestfield result behind them with the visit of bottom placed Plumley to Jim Evison Fields this Sunday. A solid victory would put Wilmslow back in the promotion spots and despite keeper King failing a late fitness test through Viral Gastroenteritis, a strong team was put out.
Things seemed to be going well when Barber opened the scoring for Town and the result looked like it was going to be a formality with wave upon wave of Wilmslow attacks being nervously repelled by Plumley. Jackson went close at the far post, Turner was inches away from a diving header and Barber lashed one wide from point blank range in the first half hour. The second goal was surely coming.
But then football is a funny game and from nowhere a Plumley attack wasn't cleared and the goal they needed came. Tails up and Plumley finally started to come into the game and it was Wilmslow, still reeling from the shock of the equaliser, that were under pressure now. Sensing a nervousness about Wilmslow, Plumley continued to play a high ball game at the Wilmslow back line causing untold problems.
After a short delay for a refereeing injury, half time arrived and a subdued Town took their half time refreshments.
The second half carried on in the same nervous way in which the first had ended and it was no surprise when Plumley took the lead, again from a high ball into the danger area. It could have been worse for Albion when Gaskell pulled off a great diving save to his right to deny Plumley.
Time for change and with the introduction of the subs it was time to get back to playing attacking wing football. Indeed it wasn't long before Royles corner was met by Turner who headed for Jackson to bundle over the line. Surely now this was the time for Wilmslow to take the game by the scruff of the neck but no, only a few more minutes had passed before a long cross into the box was met virtually unchallenged for Plumleys third.
Once again Wilmslow were chasing the game and still had 20 minutes to get something out of it. As Plumley tired Wilmslow got back to the job of attacking them and once again a cross in was met by Turner who levelled the scores again.
With time running out Wilmslow were pressing fro the winner but it failed to come. Lee headed just wide and when Jackson was bundled over in the area the referee waved away any penalty claim.
Honours even and a three week break until Town travel to Egerton.
