12 October 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Jaguars 0 - 13 away win against Poynton JFC U11 (10/10/2009)
The Jaguars awoke to an overcast, but mild and dry morning for their journey to the Deva Close Playing Fields and division newcomers, Poynton JFC.
T’was a morning on which the pitch sighed as the Jaguars prepared themselves in their all-blue strip and the red and black stripes of Poynton provided a fine contrast to the manicured bottle green grass.
The Jaguars started with an agile Finlay between the sticks, with the brick wall of Tom and Teddy in central defence, supported to the left and right by the quick full backs, Charlie and Neil. In midfield TJ and Hector lined up in menacing fashion directly behind the tricky feet of Jamie, Kieran, Sam and Natty. Brendan and Connor prowled the sidelines in readiness.
Referee Oliver Nolan, blew with gusto and the shrill of the whistle started play. The Jaguars went on the immediate attack and a series of cutting passes found Kieran who squared the ball to Jamie, the 'keeper spilled Jamie's shot and there was Natty who followed up precisely to make it 1-0 –a great start!
From the centre spot, an immediate attack by Poynton nearly caught the Jaguars cat-napping but Finlay saved. The Jaguars continued to press and a sublime solo effort from Sam saw his long shot crash into the net and the Jaguars were 2-0 up.
Poynton countered on occasions but the Jaguars broke with increasing frequency and a dead ball resulted in a throw and a powerful onward header from Sam to Kieran and onto Natty who buried the ball to make it 3-0.
Poynton tried to regroup but some neat passing across the defence from Neil via Ted and Tom to Charlie found the ball moving with haste along the left wing to Jamie who cut back a divine ball to TJ and an exquisite thread to Natty for his hat-trick; Well done Natty! -the Jaguars went 4-0 up.
The Jaguars were absorbent at the back and a series of through balls to Hector in midfield continued with intelligent play to the wings and penetrating crosses from both Jamie and Natty saw a hat full of near misses.
Once again, Poynton pushed and the Jaguars’ defence held with the assistance of Hector. Tom moved briskly out of defence with the ball in close control and rounded three of the opposition before easing to Sam and on to Kieran who weaved a wicked route around the goalie and slotted to make it 5-0.
No sooner had play recommenced when from a Charlie throw-in, Sam made his own space on the edge of the box and a sweet shot was a dive too far for the goalie, it was Sam’s second and 6-0 to the Jaguars.
Poynton were not broken however but despite their best efforts the Jaguars’ midfield cut through their defence again and Sam’s pass to Jamie saw him slot the ball with pace to make it 7-0 before half time.
The second half brought with it the fresh feet and strength of Connor and Brendan and Kieran and Natty took a well earned rest. Soon after, Natty replaced Finlay in nets. The Jaguars purred, Charlie raced out of defence, his powerful shot hit the bar, and was followed in by Jamie who put the ball beyond the keeper to make it 8-0.
Once again Teddy, Tom, Neil and Charlie gelled to halt a Poynton attack and yet another cutting pass from Charlie found the feet of Jamie and an audacious left footed lofting shot found the dizzy heights of the net; Jamie smiled and the crowd applauded! It was Jamie’s third, another hat-trick for the Jaguars and well done Jamie for following up last week's Man of the Match performance. The score was 9-0 to the Jaguars.
The pressure was relentless, Connor swept in from the right wing, a scorching shot ricocheted off the post and onlookers gasped as the ball was cleared. Teddy gathered, squared to Tom and onto Neil who fed Sam for his third and the team's third hat-trick -well done Sam!; Jaguars hit double figures, it was 10-0 and a comeback from Poynton was going to be tricky.
The Jaguars were eager for more and soon after, a delightful cross from Connor was slotted again by Jamie for his fourth goal of the morning; it was 11-0.
Poynton pushed hard for a consolation goal but the Jaguars’ defence and midfield pushed ever further forward. Jamie’s driven cross was well defended, but there in the box was TJ, fighting like a lion with his back to the goal. With the ball hanging in the air, it was as though time stood still. The crowd gasped in expectation, as TJ arched his back, and executed a scissor kick. The crowd was a sea of wide eyes, the players could only stare, a deep thud echoed around the ground as leather struck leather and jaws dropped as the ball floated effortlessly over heads and nestled into the nylon netting! Children screamed, adults cheered and old folk cried as TJ was mobbed by his team mates, it was history in the making, the goal was superb and it was 12-0.
Finally, a last attack from Poynton saw yet another break from defence resulting in a Jaguars' corner. The ball fell for Brendan who turned and shot to make it 13-0!
This was an excellent performance from the Jaguars. Having suffered heavy defeats in the second division, Poynton were short on confidence. The boys did everything asked of them by the management team. We quickly scored the first goal, there were some great passing moves, Charlie did very well playing his first full match and releasing the ball early, we followed up goal scoring chances, there were three individual hat-tricks, and the team had its third clean sheet in three games. A great achievement. Towards the end of the game, as the boys tired, and grew hungry for more goals, we started to lose our formation and shape, and nearly let in a goal from a Poynton breakaway.
It is important we remember to keep our formation in 11 a-side football. Especially when we play better teams and the matches are a lot closer. We play in the Cup next week against a team from Division 3. In this match, we must think about our individual positions all the time, where the opposition players are, and try not to follow the ball and get caught out.
A purrrfect day for the Jaguars. Three cheers and commiserations for Poynton who played with spirit. A round of applause for all players for an exciting morning of football.
Goalscorers; Jamie (4), Sam (3), Natty (3), Kieran (1), TJ (1), Brendan (1)
GBK Man of the Match; Neil –another fantastic display. A first game at right back, tough tackling, keeping his position at all times, and when the time was right, overlapping his team mate and looking for a return pass. Great football Neil, well done!
