27 September 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 2 - 5 away win against Ashton on Mersey JFC U13 Broncos (27/09/2009)
Another week, same opponents, but fortunately for the management and supporters this time the real Town showed up and produced the right result, that could have easily seen them register a higher score.
First half
With Barto back from injury and starting his first league game of the season the defence had a more familiar look and feel to it and they formed a solid platform, for the midfield and forward line to take a solid grip on the match.
After only 2 minutes Town were ahead following a fantastic solo effort from Dan. Fordy’s flick on from a quickly taken free kick saw Dan outpace the Ashton defence and get to the loose ball ahead of the advancing keeper, Dan showing great composure took the ball around the keeper and from an acute angle calmly slotted home.
This was just the start Wilmslow needed to boost their failing confidence. G & Brad quickly wrestled control of central midfield and with Fordy & Deano sticking to the flanks and obeying the managers instructions to track back, the home team were left with no option but to lump long balls forward, which Isaac easily swept up.
With such dominance it was important the boys increased their lead and this they duly did in the 13th minute, when Dan doubled his tally with another clinical finish from Jordi’s excellent defence splitting pass. Clearly the finishing practice in training last week was paying off, as only a short time later Boyley, joined the party with a crisp first time finish from Lawto’s pass.
James, thoroughly deserved his man of the match award, as despite nursing a very bad cold, he also followed his manager’s instructions to the letter, pushing forward with every attack to bolster midfield, but worked back quickly when Ashton went on the attack. In fact all the team seemed to have taken the managers comments to heart and put into practice what they had learned on the training ground.
Every ball was challenged for & despite some strange refereeing decisions, the boys battled on. Fordy forcing a smart save from a well taken free kick. The metal work came to Ashton’s rescue when Pete rattled the frame of the goal, following a smart turn and powerful shot, which the keeper could only watch flash past him.
At the back Raife & Barto used every part of the body to deal with the lively ball and on the odd occasion where their control let them down, Isaac was on hand to race of his line to clear the danger.
Second Half
With the manager asking for the same again & making no substitutions, he was not disappointed. As the boys kept the tempo and pressure going. Ashton were becoming increasingly frustrated by the dominance of the team as the odd challenge and back chat demonstrated. This seemed to simply energise the boys more.
Deano was enjoying tormenting the right back and produced a couple of great runs and stunning crosses which Fordy although timing his runs well, could not quite get enough control on as he firstly headed and then shot over the bar. Not wanting the level of performance
to dip, the boss introduced fresh legs in shape of Ol Mehta on for Dan, Owain for Bradley & Adam for Fordy. The changes certainly did impact on the team performance as shortly afterwards the goal of the match was scored. With the move starting deep in the Cougars half, Lawto won the ball ran 20 yards and the passed to Ol M with the outside of his left boot, curling the ball to perfection around the despairing foot of the defender, directly into Ol Mehta who without breaking his stride, crossed first time for Boyley to smash home.
The final changes saw Milan & Benno enter the fray and both immediately made an impact showing what great depth the squad has, but judging by their performance, it won’t be long before they deserve a starting place.
Pete was certainly enjoying himself, despite the close attention of the defenders and after another heavy challenge on edge of the box his powerful free kick beat the wall and taking a couple of wicked deflections flew across the line. Like any true striker, he immediately claimed the goal (nothing to do with the goal bonus money & the funds he needs to purchase FIFA 10 for the Xbox, which is released this Friday !!!)
Not to be outdone in the free kick stakes, the Wilmslow Express reminded everyone what a ferocious shot he has, with a Ronaldo-esque long-range free kick that just whistled wide. Pete then completed a fine game, with a clever run beating a couple of defenders, before attempting a cheeky lob over the keeper, which unfortunately clipped the cross bar and bounced free, much to the relief of his penny less father !
A great performance was slightly marred by a couple of easy goals conceded near the end. To the credit of the home team they never gave up and continued to press forward, unfortunately the Cougars defence lost concentration late on, first allowing the Ashton number 9 to sneak in unmarked for their first & shortly afterwards, the whole defence were statuesque and failed to react to Isaacs spilt catch, to allow Ashton to scramble home the second.
These late lapses should not mar a 100% improvement in performance by all the team. Hopefully confidence has been restored and the boys now know the level of they need to perform every week, starting next week in their first ever Cheshire Cup tie.
Player Ratings
Isaac Bass Showed great relief on arriving at the game to see that the goals were smaller in size than last week !!! Also showed great alertness coming off his line, when acting as sweeper to the back four. However did find the hard pitch and bobbling ball a challenge when dealing with the odd long-range low shot that was directed his way. Jordan Garner Relished the chance of revenge after last week and stuck to his man like glue, giving him no change as well as the odd bruise & verbal bashing. Played a quality through ball to set up a goal. James Lawton Whatever nurse Janet gave him it worked as James turned in a great man of the match performance, having got out of his sick bed and dosed up on Mrs Lawton’s special brew. James performance certainly drove the team onto victory. Winning every challenge at the back, following his managers training ground instructions to the letter with corners & defending free kicks. James capped his defensive performance by switching to midfield and then playing the pass of the day with the outside of his left foot to curl it around the full back leading to Town’s 4th goal. Ol Barton Players, supporters and the manager warmly welcomed the return of the big man. Immediately slotted back in to the heart of defence winning vital tackles and putting his head where most would not even dangle a leg. Raife Copp Barton Looked solid at the back alongside Barto & offered loads of vocal support to his team, showed great determination to lead the team to victory. Ol Ford Back in the starting line up, Fordy put in a determined performance and ensured he followed his manager’s instructions to track back when required. Capped a good performance, by coming close to scoring on a couple occasions with great runs into the box. George Todd Another typical G force performance, battling for everything and with Brad alongside, winning control of midfield. Bradley Jackson Relished his start role and with the managers instructions to give him a Gerrardesque performance, which he did only thing missing was a goal. Dean Musa Solid left midfield performance, showed great strength and determination in the tackle and never gave up chasing the ball, resulting in retaining possession and forcing the opposition into unforced errors. Peter Boyle Injury free performance which was resulted in staying on the pitch for all 70 mins !!! and was rewarded with a hat trick which could easily been more as he also had 2 shots that rattled the woodwork. Was a handful to the defence all day and let it be known that he would not be pushed about. Dan Miller A great solo goal, got the team off to the perfect start. Showed signs of forming a good partnership with Boyley. Used his height and pace to great advantage and thoroughly deserved his 2 goals. Adam Shaw Strong second half performance firstly on right wing & then dropping to right back. Showed a new steely determination to win the ball and came close to scoring with a fizzer of a free kick. Ol Mehta Was a bundle of energy when introduced as a second half sub and caused the tiring Ashton defence numerous problems with his acceleration? Owain Davies A true club player, offered his colleagues loads of support from the touchline & the ref some words of advise !!! Came on in the second half and gave 100% to ensure Town remained in control. Milan Asked to play on the wide right, showed great presence and awareness of all around him with some nice touches. Happier when he moved inside and made some telling passes to the forwards. Bennett Harris Added pace and presence to the back four when introduced in the second half. Never flinched from a tackle and quickly snuffed out any trouble.
