Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Cougars 2 - 2 home draw with Timperley Villa JFC U9 (03/10/2009)

With all the league fixtures cancelled this week the Cougars arranged a friendly with last week’s opponents hoping to show them who was boss!

The first third started well with Cougars line up Martin in nets Ben, Luke and Joe at the back Charlie and Neeki in the midfield and Harry up front in their Christmas tree formation of 3,2,1. Both teams started where they had finished off last week in a tight and hard tackling but sporting game. Timperley’s keeper was in excellent form, keeping a string of chances out from Neeki Harry and Charlie. Timperley should have scored from a short corner which pin balled around Cougars defense, they tried this corner again but the ever improving Cougars team adapted and snubbed out this threat.

The second third started much the same as the first but Cougars had replaced Harry with Will and Neeki with Freddie, they were now into their rhythm of pass and move and Timperley were finding it hard to live with. Will worked the keeper with a long range effort and Charlie was now starting to dominate the middle of the field. Timperley were now hitting on the break and it was one such break that they scored from against the run of play. Cougars dug in with Freddie’s tenacious tackling and Charlie spraying the ball around we were unlucky lot to score. But after a good move down the left the ball found its way to Will who dispatched it leaving Timperley’s keeper no chance.

Timperley were first out of the blocks in the last third and after a string of corners and some desperate defending from Ben, Luke and Joe, Timperley finally beat Martin for a second time after some good pressure. Cougars now got the bit between their teeth and pushed hard for an equaliser with Ben pushing hard down the right and Joe working hard to nullify the threat from Timperley’s right midfield. Luke was solid, dependable and bringing the ball out of the defense and finding a man every time. With the ever growing pressure on Timperley’s goal Cougars looked good for a draw or more, then a rash tackle on Joe from the Villa’s right back gave Cougars a free kick 25 yards from goal, Neeki put the ball down and smashed it low through a crowded penalty area into the bottom far corner of the goal. With now 5 minutes to go, we were back to next goal wins and both sides wanted it, Cougars freshened up with Freddie and Harry coming back on and were strong enough at the back to see it through to the end of the game without conceding but could not break down Timperley,s defense to get a winner, I hope we do not draw Villa in the cup as we would be playing till midnight. Final assessment; fantastic game played by two evenly matched teams and in the right spirit, we look forward to playing them again with points at stake next time.
