13 September 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 5 - 2 home win against Egerton (13/09/2009)
A new start for Wilmslow Town Veterans FC as they played their inaugural home fixture at Jim Evison playing fields on Sunday. After a good point at Sale Town the week before, Wilmslow faced a tricky fixture against an Egerton side who had beaten them twice last season and finished a place above them in the league table.
It was a more focused and determined Wilmslow that started this fixture brighter than they had the previous week, and the concentration and quick one touch football that had been practiced during the week soon started to pay dividends. It wasn't long before some pacey wing play from Carden produced a fine cross that Turner latched onto and forced into the roof of the net after 10 minutes. The good interconnecting play continued and on 19 minutes Turner cut in from the right and laid the ball to Barber who doubled the Wilmslow advantage.
More chances were coming for Wilmslow who were really on top of the game but then on 35 minutes after some hesitation in the Wilmslow defence, the ball broke to Egertons Mark Tarry who hit a sweet 25 yard shot high past the diving King. Wilmslow however did not let this frustrate them and finished the half strongly.
Wilmslow’s numerical advantage on the touchline paid dividends on a hot Sunday during the second half and one of the half time introductions was soon to display his freshness and pace. A summer signing from Egyptian club Hurghada, Sherif Shaanoun outpaced the Egerton left back from the half way line and entering the box drove a low shot past the Egerton keeper. As time passed and the heat and pace of the game took its toll on the players, a terrible bobble caused the Egerton keeper to miskick the ball straight to Turner in front of the Egerton goal. A humble tap in made the score 4-1 and there looked to be no way back for Egerton.
The players thought differently though and continued to persevere and attack Wilmslow. Their persistence paid off when another long throw caused yet more problems for Wilmslow and Bolan headed in for 4-2.
The game however was put beyond doubt with minutes remaining in controversial fashion when Wilmslow were awarded a penalty for an innocuous challenge and the sprightly Jackson duly converted. A new first for Wilmslow, five goals in a game and a deserved win puts them top of the division for the first time too.
