Veterans lion roars - for first game of season

After the torrential storms of the previous week it was a glorious afternoon as Walton Park played host to the afternoons Veterans football match featuring Sale Town and the rebadged Wilmslow Town.

Once the Sale Town manager had relocated the inflatable fun fair behind the "Altrincham End" of the ground and taken up his refereeing duties for the day the game was underway.

Sale Town started the brighter of the two teams and whilst Wilmslow were clearly taking time to wake up and participate in the game Sale ran rampant with some slick attacking football.

It took less than two minutes for Sale to break the deadlock when a dangerous cross from the left was met by Nick Turners glancing header into the corner of the goal.

Straight from the restart Sale kept the pressure on and caused Wilmslow problems but the defence stood firm and after 20 minutes the Wilmslow Town lion finally awoke.

End to end action saw both teams miss opportunities and after a pulsating first half referee Steve blew for half time.

After a few changes a resurgent Wilmslow came out of the blocks with all cylinders firing and after Turner hit the bar they must have wondered if the luck would finally go their way.

Finally a break as a free kick was awarded against Sale in a dangerous position. Maskell, taking responsibility as Captain for the day, duly curled a delightful left foot free kick around the wall and past the static Sale Keeper.

With time running out and frustration growing on both sides the match started to lose its sparkle and threatened to boil over but this was prevented and well handled by Sales ref for the day.

Final score 1-1 and well a reffed, hard fought entertaining game enjoyed by many passing spectators in Walton Park for the afternoon. Even the League Secretary managed to enjoy 20 mins of this game.
