U13's untouchable victory - that's the way

Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 3 - 6 away win against Stretford Victoria JFC U13 (13/09/2009)

The lads tapped the feistiness in their bellies as the match demanded them to step up to a known opponent with strong players.  Overall it was a well played game, involving a balance of skill that tipped our way to a secure win.

The game was well paced, and the referee made several calls that kept the teams within the margin of dynamic football.

Peter scored a hat trick and was unruffled in every situation where he perched himself on the goal mouth. Early in the first half, he and Dan were able to rescue an attack on Isaac by the opposition and transform the play to deliver the first goal by Wilmslow Town, with Peter latching onto Dan’s inside ball, holding off a couple of defenders before running into the box and slipping the ball past the keeper. (1-0).

Stretford responded with a breakaway and despite Jordi holding up their attacker, the ball deflected past Isaac’s despairing dive. (1-1). Kitten heels were kicked off but the game continued apace.

Owain and Isaac fended off further offenses in the Wilmslow end and Bennett and Dean supported the effort with deft moves and solid communication with their team-mates.

Adam was relentless in his pursuit of shots on goal and took every opportunity to deflect the opposition from his zone.  His game was on form and, as a result, he was awarded MOM.

A few scuffles arose during the back end of the first half, but the referee maintained a controlling hand in order to ensure that a well balanced game took place. The grunge-silk attitude was well demonstrated in certain quarters off-pitch.

Dan enjoyed a strong run and reinforced his position as a solid contributor on the team.

George (G) maintained his usual poise, with never a missed tackle or pass.  He is the team’s stalwart in a number of ways and the crowd nearly witnessed a goal from his well placed shot.

Isaac also played a strong game, making many saves and battling back from a painful tackle to remain between the posts for the remainder of the match.

Raife withstood a brutal stamping injury and was able to regain his sense of humour once off the field and recovered. His play, when on pitch, was impeccable.

Ollie M stepped in to demonstrate to Stretford his skill of ‘receive-control-go’ but was not able to follow through to achieve a goal during the match.

The lads were awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half which went over the net within a whisker of a point (half time score – still 1-1).

The second half started with a blazing two goals for Wilmslow.  Match reporter was otherwise engaged at coffee station but was assured that Pete and Luke exhibited the high standards of the club in their scoring performance (3-1).

From our own statistician – a good inside ball from Oli M, following an excellent passing move, saw Peter in an inside left position with a shot across the keeper into the back of the net.

Luke’s goal came from a long pass by Owain with Luke skinning two defenders before slotting the ball home.

Luke used his heels of fire when fed the ball which, sadly, wasn’t often enough to mark up the scoreboard more than once. His goal was a cracker, however.

Jordi dug his heels in at every opportunity and deflected several attacks by the opponents

The Wilmslow defensive side rallied behind its forwards to deflect several corner kicks and throw ins that were a bit too close to Isaac’s comfort area. Well done Raife, Bennett and Owain.

Despite these laudable efforts, the opposition was able to ‘loop’ a goal into the net and the score moved to 3-2. The tension was discernable and the parents became slightly more vocal in supporting their sides. Designer sunglasses hid the nervous twitches.

Peter then passed a perfect cross to Oliver F who had his forehead prepared for the finish.  A cheer erupted and the sideline became mildly more relaxed (4-2).

A storming run from Bradley, beating four players and using his strength, saw him drive into the box and cut the ball back from the by line for another cheeky goal by Peter which galvanised the Wilmslow lead by moving it to 5-2.

Milan and Bradley kept the pressure on and caused the Stretford side to step up the pace as the score required protection by Wilmslow. This resulted in a goal late in the second half (5-3). Their last two goals both came from long punts down the middle with a final flick through to a striker who on both occasions was offside. However the Ref did not give it despite our resident linesperson flagging frantically.

Pete then provided Dan with a ‘gimme’, as he sprinted past the last defender, dribbled round the keeper and deftly placed the ball into the back of the net to ensure that Wilmslow’s victory was untouchable (6-3).

Overall, Wilmslow Town dominated the game and regained their confidence and zest to win.  The team shut down several efforts by Stretford to enter the end zone and emerged victors in a well deserved result.

Player Ratings
Isaac
Did well given he was not 100% fit due to an upset stomach, which had the coach and Dan (standby by keeper) keeping a watchful eye in case Isaac made a mad dash to the bushes.
Pulled off some crucial saves and showed good alertness to come off his line.

Jordi
Did well in the first half up against a very nifty winger and was unlucky when making a great block that unfortunately took a wicked deflection off his shin past Isaac.

Benno
Passed a late fitness test on his ankle and did a stirling job at Left back, using his pace to great effect to help clear the danger at the back.

Raife
Took one for the team literally which brought tears to the eyes of not only the player but all Dad's present.
Showed great determination and leadership to demand to return to the fray and marshalled the back line admirably and also point out politely to the ref that both goals conceded in the 2nd half were offside.

Owain
Mr. Versatile started off at Centre half and as the game progressed became more comfortable in the role, before switching to left back.
Showed great vision and played a magnificent through ball to Luke for the teams crucial 3rd goal.

Adam (Right Mid)
The Wilmslow Express had a great game which deservedly won him MOM.
Put some great runs and crosses in during the first half and much relief to the SV full back switched to right back, in the second half but used his pace to neutralise the Left Wing by matching him for speed and by standing firm and pressurising him into loosing the ball.

Gee
Was just another G master class defensive midfield performance. Read the threat and won the majority of his tackles.

Dan
Struggled a bit in the first half in central midfield as the boys did not have sufficient possession, although when he got the ball he made some good forward passes and in fact set Pete up for the first goal. Did well in the second half when pushed up front. Took his goal well.

Deano (Left Mid)
Put in one or two great forward runs but struggled to get into the game due to the lack of service in the first half, which left him having to keep tracking back to help his defensive colleagues where he made some strong and important challenges.

Pete
Much better performance today. Got involved right from the start took the advice from his coach to hit the back of the net and scored a very deserved hat trick and two assists. Was a constant threat with pace and some power. Only surprise was a missed penalty. But did not let this upset him.

Luke
Showed what the team was missing last week. His electric pace was a constant threat to the SV defence linked up very effectively with Pete and showed some neat touches. Thoroughly deserved his goal, which he took very coolly.

Ol Ford
Came on for the second half and scored again with his head against SV. Battled away well in 2nd half and could easily have doubled his tally with a couple of shots just off the target.

Ol M
Another second hand sub who made an immediate contribution with a great assist playing Pete through for the 2nd goal. Did well on the left wing both in attack and in defence.

Milan
Was shocked to come on as Centre half for the injured Raife but did well before switching to more familiar central midfield role. Showed some great touches and composure and helped with G and then Brad in wrestling control of the midfield.

Bradley
Made an explosive impact when coming on as a sub. Some very strong forward runs from one of which set up Pete for the telling 5th goal.
