12 September 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 9 - 1 home win against Urmston Town JFC U9 Atoms (12/09/2009)
The U9s Panthers enjoyed the first match of the season at home in glorious September sunshine and a great looking pitch. Urmston won the toss and chose to kick off. They applied some good early pressure and the ball was hardly out of the Wilmslow half for the first five minutes. However, the pattern of the game started to emerge early on with the Panthers soaking up the attacks and then breaking away with good effect.
Tenniel and Sam H, stood firm and as soon as they got the ball a counter attack followed resulting in a corner for the Panthers. The set piece that followed was very effective and Joel smashed in his first after exactly 5 minutes of play. Urmston restarted and straight away a great piece of flowing play, with the ball crossed in saw Joel grab a second. 2-nil after 6 minutes.
Wilmslow seemed to be very comfortable sitting behind the ball and played well in defence and as soon as the opportunities presented themselves counter attacked with pace and determination. On 8 minutes a sweeping counter attack with a perfectly weighted cross saw Captain for the day Ben shoot a first time strike with real conviction. 3-nil the panthers.
Urmston were made of stern stuff however, and continued to press. With a great passing move they shot for goal. As he had done the week before Tom saved, looking ever more the Peter Schmichael of the league. As a demonstration of the great defending from the Panthers, it wasn’t until the 11th minute that they conceded the first corner, which the visitors wasted with an over hit set piece.
The second period was almost a copy of the first. The Panthers kicked-off but Urmston, in their bright yellow applied the early pressure. Then with a strange football tennis move on the half way line the ball was played through to Scott in a great position. Strong strike, four-nil to the home side. Straight after the kick-off, a clean break down the left, with a deep cross from Sam H, and Scott slotted his second goal. At the end of the second period Urmston pressured some more and had another shot saved by Tom at the second break.
Wilmslow won the toss for the start of the third period, but this time they started with some fiery passion. Scott hassled the Urmston midfield, the ball broke into space, and with a great piece of individual skill Scott got his hat-trick. As soon as the restart from Urmston got proceedings underway again, the Panthers pushed down the right and Scott whipped a cross in that was deflected off the visitors back line and in. Seven-nil to the blues, and there was more to come.
The rotation system of the Wilmslow management had kept Urmston guessing and with Ben back on after a rest he loitered near the opposition goal with great effect. Fynn, introducing great speed into the play crossed from the right, the ball bobbled through legs of both teams and Ben, poaching like an Ian Rush figure, slotted home for his second and the Panthers eighth. Throughout the match, Urmston showed great character and team work and never gave up, and a well worked goal from their number 6 with a minute to go was just desserts for their efforts. Wilmslow were to have the last word, however. Again, Fynn ran at pace down the right. He fired in a very quick cross which caught the Urmston keeper unawares and found the top corner of the net. A nine-one victory to the Panthers.
