13 September 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U15s 2 - 2 away draw with AFC Urmston Meadowside U15 (13/09/2009)
Putting last week behind them, this week the team showed us some glimpses of what they are going to be capable of in the coming weeks and months. The team also welcomed Callum and Reece for their first appearance in Town colours.
With last week’s prediction of a wet & windy journey to Flixton Fields the match reporter hadn’t taken into account that that was this week’s destination. So it was bright sunny morning that awaited the revived team. However things didn’t start too brightly with two goals conceded early on, one from a deflection and one from a corner.
This seemed to galvanise the lads and there were fewer opportunities gifted to the opposition in the remainder of the half. Mid way through the first half came the most bizarre moment of the game – the ball was passed through to Reece who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net clearly for all, but the unsighted referee, to see. Thankfully no-one gave up as the whistle hadn’t sounded and when the ball rebounded out to Joe it was he was credited with putting the ball unquestionably into the back of the net. Sorry Reece – your time will come.
The remainder of the first half saw a good attempt from Jamie which forced a tough save for their keeper. In all, the team finished the half strongly and were unlucky not to convert any of the chances they created. Harley, in particular, was strong in some crucial play in defence to keep the scoring chances down, contributing to his award of Man of the Match.
I don’t know what was said in the half-time team talk (no hair-dryers in evidence) but they seemed a changed side in the second half. There was more determination which showed in the dominance of possession and the amount of time camped in Urmston’s half. The spectators were treated to some lovely displays of passing football which generally finished with a chance on goal. There was an unlucky miss from Joe and a cross from Danny with no-one waiting to tap it in. Anyone using fingers & toes to count the number of corners won by Town would have run out before, eventually, Joe got his head on the end of one and scored the equaliser. Before the game came to its end, Town ought to have been ahead when Joe missed an open goal, after a fine save at the other end prevented Urmston from taking the lead.
We mustn’t forget the lighter moment of the game when an unfortunate Urmston player lofted a ball only to see his bright red boot soaring higher than the ball. I’m not quite sure which item our defender was trying to clear first!
It’s the reverse fixture next weekend so the lads will know what to expect. Keep your cool again as you did especially towards the end of the game.
Reminder: the venue has been switched to away at Flixton Fields again, 10:30 kick off, to allow everyone to get home in time to see another team playing in blue win!!!
