9 September 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U11 Jaguars 2 - 7 away win against Richmond Rovers U11 (B) (05/09/2009)
After a Summer break, the Jaguars started their preparations for the new season with a friendly against Richmond Rovers B, last Saturday.
It’s all change this season with new additions to the Squad, a new League, new opposition, 11-a-side, larger pitches, big nets, and offside, so there was much excitement, and some trepidation as the teams took the field. As the opposition, were also in a higher division, and are a well run and organised Club, this was likely to be a tough test for the boys and a good indication as to their preparation, form and appetite for the season ahead.
The Jaguars lined up in a new 4-1-4-1 formation (no, seriously) with debuts given to Neil, Kieran and Brendan. Some things don’t change however, and in their usual fashion, the Jaguars started tentatively. Their nervousness was rewarded with a goalkeeping fumble which lead to Rovers taking the lead with their first shot on goal. But, these boys are growing up now and are learning that conceding a goal is a signal, not for defeat, but for heads to be held high, to have a positive attitude, to play with a smile on their faces, and to have the determination to fight back.
In a performance of resilient and organised defence, sweeping passing moves and lightning attacks, the Jaguars hit back, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, yes, 7 goals, and it could have been more. Rovers’ response being via an own goal that was worthy of Richard Dunne’s collection (do Aston Villa really know what they are letting themselves in for?).
The final score 7-2. Happy boys!
This display was a great start but also started to teach us about those parts of the game where we need to work harder, especially now that the boys are getting bigger and we are playing on larger pitches. We need to get fitter, we need to learn to pass the ball longer and harder, we need to think about our positions on the pitch, and we need to talk to our team mates and help each other all the time. And of course, play, enjoy and express ourselves.
There was no Man of the Match in this friendly game. All 11 players were outstanding. Let’s make sure we do the same again when we play our first competitive match in the League.
