U13's forget how to win - manager to set new training regime

Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 2 - 5 home defeat to Hough End Griffins U13 (A) (06/09/2009)

The much anticipated opening game of the new season had a bad feel about it as early as last Friday. Firstly, not just content with stopping young lads from practicing on their pitches across the town Macclesfield Council decided prematurely as usual, to cancel the use of all pitches because of the weather causing the fixture to be reversed to Hough End. As it turned out, all the pitches in Wilmslow were bathed in sunshine and a warm, drying breeze all weekend would have provided the best playing conditions we are likely to see throughout the coming season. That’s Macc Council for you though!

The Cougars turned up at Hough End to find no ref so the Manager and club Chairman was asked to take the whistle which he reluctantly did. Then the Hough End managers had to try and stretch a junior 9 a-side net over a near full size goal. The omens weren’t good.

Last years champions looked the part decked out in their new kits and boasting two new signings. Dan Miller and Milan Starkie, who they prised away from Hough End in the summer. Unfortunately, Luke couldn’t play due to not being registered in time for the game and poor old Oli Barton had to observe from the touchline with his arm in a pot after an incident while playing around with an odd shaped ball, but that’s another story!

The Town started the game brightly enough and it was obvious from the off that Hough End were going to be a tough proposition in terms of their physical strength. The boys had had a warning after last seasons mauling at the hands of the very same team which almost scuppered their title campaign. It was clear for all to see that they hadn’t learned anything from that match and as soon as the first little cluster of heavy challenges came in, Wilmslowitis set in too.

Hough End took a deserved lead with an absolute peach of a shot which rocketed off the right boot of their number 10 and dipped, as if being remotely controlled, under the bar to almost rip the tiny little nets off the goal frame. A true contender for the goal of the season already.

The game restarted but Towns early endeavour started to subside as the mid-field seemed to vanish from view allowing Hough End all the freedom they wanted to start passing the ball around. The poor Town defence were working overtime to try and stem the flow. Benno took another knock to his already fragile ankle and G had to drop into the vacant centre half position allowing Milan to enter the fray in mid-field against his old team mates.

Deano made some good runs to threaten the Griffins defence but that’s all the Town really did do, threaten. Man of the match Dan broke through the largely untroubled back line and latched onto a Boyley pass to smash the ball into the back of the net under a heavy challenge which he managed to shrug off. With the game level again, surely the champions were not going to let it go again and they’d take the game to the Griffins.

Not to be. The Griffins looked undaunted and soon took the lead again just before half time. What chances the Town did create were wasted and squandered. A mixture of poor finishing and a lack of real commitment being the main problem. Chances fell in both halves to both strikers and wingers and all were guilty of a lack of composure and commitment in front of goal. Shortly after this Griffins made it 3-1 with another sloppy goal caused by no one from midfield tracking back.

A glimmer of hope was offered when Dan chased a lost cause to the by-line. Surrounded by four defenders he somehow turned them before picking out Owain who notched his first of the season from the edge of the box to make it 3-2. Straight from the kick off Town gave it away again to the opposition and the Griffins midfielder casually strolled past all of ours and stroked it unchallenged into the net to take the game beyond reach. Oli M and Adam at least ignited some pace into the team and Adam was unlucky with a powerhouse shot which rattled the post late on.

Raiffe marshalled the defence well but Jordi, Lawto and G could do little with very little help from their team mates further up the pitch. The Griffins scored again as the game drew to a close but it has to be said that the Champions had more than enough chances to at least draw the game but in the end got what they deserved which was nothing.

Raking over the embers of the game there were some bright spots. Firstly Dan was very impressive both up front and in mid field. His goal was a stunner and his assist for Owain’s was class. Milan looked comfortable on the ball and his passing was good. The defenders fought hard and you could only feel sorry for them as the rest of their team mates were content to just let them take a battering.

You can be sure that the boss will be working on finishing and tackling and will demand commitment from every single man next week.
