No mid-week worries for U10's A - a cracking game of football

31 March 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 1 - 4 away win against Cheadle & Gatley FC U10 (31/03/2009)

Starting line-up: Miles & Will forward, Alex & Calvin midfield, Tom & Ian defence, Nathan goal

The right honourable David Jackson, esq. presiding as referee.

1st Period:
Cheadle-Gatley started out strong and caught our boys out with a goal dribbling in off the far post in the first couple of minutes of play.

Suitably brought to life by the warning, Albion poured on the effort for the better part of the rest of the period, with several chances and very near misses at the Cheadle-Gatley end. Of note were cracking shots by Miles, Alex and Ian, and an attempt by Tom to capitalise on a corner by Miles, all of which were denied by some great goal-keeping and defence by the opposing team and a fair amount of just plain bad luck.

Some equally good saves at the Albion end kept the score to 1-0 until just before the end of the period when our boys’ skill and effort were finally rewarded with a goal by Miles, assisted by Will (thanks to Jacko for that info – yours truly was so busy writing I missed the work up to the goal!). Score at end of period: 1-1

2nd Period: (Calvin replaced by Braden)
A complete reverse of the first period as Albion came in blazing with a very early goal by Will, assisted by Miles and a very skilful work up by Alex.

Two more chances were well-shot but well-saved by the Cheadle-Gatley keeper before the opposition finally got themselves sorted for a shot on our goal. This was just tipped by Nathan to go off the cross-bar and over the net.

With C-G turned back on, the chances thinned a bit at each end, but the Albion persisted with some excellent ball-handling and team play – it was really nice to see them just get their heads down and keep their focus, just pouring it on even after several missed attempts which might have got a lesser team demotivated!

The persistence finally paid off near the end of the period with Will (assist) and Miles (goal) teaming up again to score. Score at end of period: 1-3

3rd Period: (Nathan replaced by Patrick)
This period saw a bit more focus on defence by the Albion with Cheadle-Gatley pouring on the efforts to equalise. Some great defending and several superb saves by Patrick held them at bay.

A substitution mid-period with Alex moving forward to replace Will and Calvin coming back in to Alex’s spot kept the boys looking lively to the end, and gave Alex the opportunity to head in a throw-in by Tom for our 4th goal about halfway through the period.

Both teams played hard right up to the final whistle, and everybody agreed that it was a cracking game of football. Cheadle-Gatley certainly gave us a great game and the feeling on the sidelines was friendly and positive – definitely how kids’ football should be! Final score: 1-4
