U10's A in replay of last week - sadly, not same result

28 March 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 1 - 2 home defeat to AFC Urmston Meadowside U10 (28/03/2009) Match: Cup semi-final Team squad: All present Conditions: Soft, cold, a bit drizzly (or dribbly, in Jacko’s case)
Having beat Urmston in last weekend’s league game, the squad was confident and eager to rack up another win against this very competitive side. However, despite plenty of opportunities to finish off a rally with a goal, and some excellent football played by the lads, the result was a disappointing 2-1 for Urmston.
Albion started strongly, blasting into action on the first whistle and taking control of the early part of the match. Alex used the left wing and enjoyed a number of runs towards the net, supported by passes from Braden, Calvin and Miles. He pinged the cross bar from a distance after one of Miles’ impeccable passes. Albion kept the pressure on and was able to deflect a number of long throw-ins by Urmston, largely off the heads of Tom and Ian.
Nathan defended the net in style, with several saves and rushes, ensuring that the ball was kicked well away when he took control of it. His shouting to team mates helped to structure the play in the Albion end. Will was able to get a foot on the ball and break away a few times, but was unsuccessful in placing the ball in the net, despite many close chances.
Ian played an excellent game in right back, consistently winning the ball and delivering one header after another to propel it away from the box and down the field. Braden was also able to deliver strong tackles, win the ball and pass it forward on several occasions.
Tom’s knee injury forced him to retire from the game during this period, and he was replaced in centre back by Sam.
Some feisty play was undertaken by both sides in the middle of the field, resulting in multiple ball turnovers and strong ball handling skills were evident. Sam made a valiant effort to divert what would surely have been a goal by heading the ball over Patrick and over the top of the net. He also took a shot from a considerable distance, placing the ball just outside the goal post.
Miles, Calvin and Alex continued their smooth interchanges, retrieving the ball and moving it down the field on many occasions. Alas, none of these opportunities carried the follow through required to shoot and score.
The second period saw Braden take a rest at the beginning, with Alex dropping to left back and Will coming in up front.
Nathan made 3 fantastic saves within the first 5 minutes, during some tense play at the Albion end of the pitch. Ian assisted him by heading, trapping and passing the ball to Calvin, Miles and Will. Will then undertook two consecutive shots and narrowly missed. Again, a goal was in the Wilmslow sights, but unattainable. Sam also came close to getting Albion on the scoreboard with a shot headed off a corner kick.
The period then slowed down somewhat, with more measured play by both sides, and a few free kicks that didn’t provide tangible results. Good skill continued to prevail on both sides.
Then, a shot by Urmston was ticked slightly by our defense, causing it to just barely evade Nathan’s grasp. 1-0 to Urmston.
The team came back in the third period with fighting spirit. Ian and Braden came off to join Tom on the touch line and Nathan was replaced by Patrick, who performed an impossible save by reaching so high that his arms no doubt stretched by a half inch longer than anyone thought possible.
Alex cracked a hard shot at the Urmston keeper, who also made an impossible save, dashing the Albion hopes of equalizing. Over the next few minutes Urmston then moved the ball to the Albion end and popped a sharp shot, off a long throw, past Patrick, making the score 2-0 to Urmston.
Albion retaliated by racing and passing down the field, finishing with a severe shot by Miles that went just outside the net. Another thwarted attempt to realize results. After a long kick to the Albion end, Patrick then managed an unusual save by capturing and then sitting on the ball, a move that will no doubt be adopted as one of his signature skills.
Finally, in the dying minutes of the match, Alex scored on a rebound off one of the opponents, making the score 2-1 to Urmston. However the team couldn’t muster an equalizing goal and the final score remained 2-1.
