Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 1 - 3 away win against Ashton on Mersey JFC U10 Tigers (14/03/2009)

Bright yet blustery conditions met players and supporters alike at Ashton on Mersey this Saturday morning. You can’t beat a cup tie to get the passion juices flowing. Coaches and parents seemed fired up for this Quarter final cup tie. Another good turnout for Albion ensured a good rotation for the coaching staff. The only missing player today was Patrick who had a social clash which won out over the fixture.

Today’s referee who had a good few years experience on the players blew the whistle and battle commenced. Wilmslow started a little slow maybe adjusting to the wind and away pitch. Alex Jackson was playing centre back with Tom and Sam in reserve. This new formation was taking a little time to find its feet. The first 5 mins saw end to end football as both sides looked to gain an early advantage. After a turnover in midfield the Ashton lad put a through ball down the centre of the park which the centre forward, after eluding a tackle from Jackson, stroked neatly past Nathan into the corner of the net to put Ashton 1-0 up. Game on.

This seemed to galvanise the Albion who, to be fair had been a little behind the game to this point. A change took place, Sam came on for Ian and a shuffle at the back was done. Will and Miles joined in some neat interplay only for Will to see his shot well saved by the Ashton keeper. Wilmslow continued to create chances and corners through the remainder of the half Calvin and Miles both working hard in midfield to win the ball back for Wilmslow. Ashton defended well and stuck to their guns and just as the half was ending produced a shot that keeper Nathan did well to turn around the post. The referee then blew time on the first period and Ashton went off 1-0 up looking well pleased.

A much more determined Wilmslow took to the field in the second period, perhaps down to a timely bit of coaching from Andy and Steve. The parents and supporters could see a change for the better. Wilmslow took the game to Ashton in this second period and chances came so thick and fast that this reporter had a hard time noting them all for your reading pleasure. I can recall Miles putting a shot round the post , having a shot cleared off the line and having another couple of chances blocked. Will also made space and saw a couple of efforts narrowly going wide. You could not fault the lads for effort. Alex Jackson looking more confident also had a good shot patted down by the keeper. The tension on the sideline was certainly keeping the fans warm. Just as those who follow Wilmslow thought that it could be one of those days, a well placed corner kick from Miles saw Tom rise and nod the ball into the Ashton net. Cheers and relief all round.

Credit to Ashton who with the wind behind them came right back at our chaps. Sam is mentioned in despatches for a great last tackle just when the Ashton centre forward thought he had the Wilmslow goal at his mercy. Then followed a free kick that went just over the bar. To be fair Nathan looked to have it covered and the defence had organised themselves well. Wilmslow kept creating chances and saw numerous efforts either, being blocked, cleared off the line or saved by the Ashton keeper. The Ashton midfield used the wind to their advantage and Nathan did well to get behind a long looping shot from distance that almost put him and the ball into the back of the net. The referee played about 10 mins injury time?? Before blowing up for the end of a thoroughly exciting second period score tied 1-1 with Wilmslow having the best of the play but Ashton looking dangerous on the break.

Period 3 did not start too well with us losing the toss and having to kick into the wind. Coach Fenton did wryly point out that we seemed to be playing better into the wind. You should never second guess a good coach. Wilmslow started the third period in determined mood and got their reward for constant pressure when Alex saw his well struck shot whiz past the Ashton keeper right into the top corner. Dave Jackson was heard to reminisce how he too had put one in the top corner in his career, only at the wrong end. Well done Alex, who says kids don’t learn from their parents mistakes? Wilmslow now had the bit between the teeth, Ian who had come back on had a shot just go wide, Tom had another header just go over and things were looking good. Aston were not to be put down though and keeper Nathan had another long high shot to deal with in which he was fortunate that the Ashton striker put the rebound wide of a gaping net. The parents on the side were now very much into this game cheering our lads on and oooing and ahing to the thrills and spills on show. Another slick Wilmslow move saw the ball put hard and low across the Aston gaol and Alex was rewarded for following the play with a good finish at the far post. 3-1 . Wilmslow did well to contain Ashton to few chances in the last remaining minutes of the game and some timely reminders to the Referee saw him blow full time. Whoopee were into the next round.

Man of the match went to Nathan for some solid goalkeeping throughout the whole game that kept us in it when it mattered. I do feel an honourable mention should go to Alex for his two timely goals. Everybody today played well. Sam, Tom and Bradon were solid at the back and supported the attack well. Calvin, Ian and Miles were industrious and hard working never ceasing to track back and do the grunt work. Will up front was ever lively and caused no end of trouble for the Ashton defence, on another day he could have scored at least two. Last mention to the coaches who never stop encouraging and trying to teach the beautiful game to our kids. Well done all, see you at the next game.
