7 March 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 1 - 3 away win against Wilmslow Sports JFC U10 Hawks (07/03/2009)
First period
A new formation to start the game : with two at the back, (Alex and Tom) to try and give more attacking options.
Albion off to a flying start as Will collects the ball straight from the whistle, takes it round the opposition defence and a slick pass to Sam allows him to shoot crisply past the goalkeeper. Barely a couple of minutes gone and one nil up was what an “over tired” Wilmslow team needed to set the tone.
We know that Wilmslow Sport are no slouches and they soon try and get back on level terms, they force a corner but a good save from Nathan soothes our nerves.
Will is still playing strongly and is proving very difficult for Wilmslow Sport to contain him.
All the action is now on the “Sport” goal, a corner from Miles sadly goes just too high for even Tom to get his head on it. But showing once again signs of tiredness from the team as a few minutes later a perfect corner from Sam was missed by a sluggish attack.
Alex was linking up well with Will and Miles to keep the pressure on Wilmslow sport. The defence was also holding well with long balls from Tom and Alex releasing fresh attacks and keeping the Wilmslow Sport keeper on his toes.
Toward the end of the period Wilmslow Sport grew in confidence and kept us on our toes with good keeping skills from Nathan and a couple of clearing headers from Tom keeping them at bay.
Before we could become complacent W S upped their game and was now far more evenly balanced, Will had another great shot saved by W Sport goalie. Calvin however was able to supply a neat pass through to Miles who scored to make the game 2-0.
Second period
A recurrence of a muscle strain saw Tom substituted and unable to continue, the formation was changed back to a defensive line of Alex, Ian and Braden, with Miles in midfield and Calvin and Will at the sharp end.
Ian made his presence known immediately with strong work and great communication. The game is by no means over as W Sport are still pressing us to get back in the game, but a great pass from Calvin to Will saw him control the ball incredibly well and position himself (despite the nerves on the side lines) to ensure that from a very difficult angle he was able to find the back of the net. 3-0 !
A couple of changes saw Patrick on for Nathan and Patrick brought us a new dimension with some good long kicks from hand, and Sam on for Alex and despite continued good work from our defence Wilmslow Sport were able to get a goal back to make it 3-1 .
As the end of the period came it was still clear that we would have a fight on our hands to keep the lead as Wilmslow Sport were determined to keep pressing us. Miles and Ian made a final push to give us a goal but were thwarted and after what seemed like an age the whistle finally went to end the second period.
Third period
The line-up for the final period was Patrick in goal, Sam, Alex and Ian at the back with Miles, Will and Calvin up front.
After an un-eventful start the action warmed up with a header from Ian that had an impact causing him to leave the field and Braden taking his duties.
Comments from the sideline were now on the lines of the stress of U10’S football Coaching (particularly after late night school discos) could reduce Fenton’s life expectancy dramatically!
Even to the end continuous pressure from Wilmslow Sport needed strong defensive work from the back three with Braden once again showing his ability to be in the right place and be a real menace when needed.
It was clear from the first few minutes that Wilmslow Sport weren’t going to settle for a defeat and they were to a degree “all over us” but we managed to hang in there with good tackling, long throw-ins to help clear our lines, and good kick out from the defence and the goalies to ease the pressure.
But we still had our chances, Will put the ball just wide but so did W Sport to keep our nerves on edge right to the end. The game tended to fall way and get a bit scrappy as both sides scrambled to maintain their hold which in the circumstance was probably to be expected...
The end of the game came with us being happy with the win but tiredness showed at the end..... no more school discos on Friday ? Either way they did a great job but far from their best ...thankfully enough this time ....
Calvin was man of the match and deserved it for consistently responding to a challenging marker and standing his ground whilst keeping focused on the bigger game.
