Veterans quick out of the blocks - fastest goal of the season?

Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 2 - 0 home win against Sale Town (08/03/2009)

In recent weeks Wilmslow Albion have been slow starters, but this was not the case today, as Kevin Barber scored what has to be a candidate for goal of the season, after just 1min 20 seconds of this vital encounter for Albion. Receiving a lovely high, hard, diagonal ball in to chest height from Arrowsmith, Barber flicked it up in the air with his outstretched toe and spinning, hit the ball on the turn, still at chest height from outside the box. It flew past a motionless keeper who could only watch in awe.

A wet and slippy pitch was not going to produce the most flowing of football matches but both teams stuck to their tasks and chances during the first half were few and far between. Indeed when a hailstorm and lightning forced the ref to take the players off after 35 minutes, it looked like the game might not reach a conclusion. Fortunately the sun emerged after the brief storm and play continued. However the pitch was more suited to mudbathing than football due to the aformentioned downpour mixing with the already skiddy surface.

The second half saw more of the same gutsy football from both teams and Sale came close on a couple of occasions. King produced a couple of fine saves and commanded his penalty area with real authority.

A free kick on the hour from Royle was tipped over by the Sale keepers fingers and Thomson fired high twice too. The game was made safe on 75 minutes though when from a free kick won by the indefatigable Price, Fenton curled a low diagonal ball into the box at pace. The keeper diving on to it watched in horror as it squirmed through his grasp and into the path of Royle who won't score many easier ones than this.

Indeed lighting nearly struck twice for the Sale keeper when this time after winning the free kick, Royle copied Fentons tactic only for the ball to squirm this time to Harris who saw his shot poked off the line by a defender.

Albion visit bottom club Prestfield next hoping they can avenge the defeat to them a few weeks ago and get back into the promotion spot.
