Recipe for Improvement

 Ingredients

15 players raring to go
1 fired-up manager
1 flat & relatively dry pitch (cleared of doggy *%!*&)
1 set of small goals
Bunch of assorted, noisy hangers-on

Method

1. Forget you played this team last week & conceded double-digit goals
2. Start as you mean to go on – we can do this !!
3. OK, so you might have to camp in your own half for most of the first half
4. Insert a bit of light relief by the introduction of a ringer for the opposition – OK so he had four legs and long black & white hair & all he wanted was to play with the ball
5. Work out after last week that although the opposition may be tall and big that they’re not all fast and skilful & can be got round by some clever passing
6. Remember you have to defend corners or else the ball ends up in the back of the net
7. Put in a request for goal line cameras – the ball that hit the cross-bar didn’t cross the line when it bounced down, did it?
8. Confound the opposition with a free ball up front to “Nash” who, despite having five defenders round him, all twice his size, completes a skilful, mazy run to put the ball in the back of the net
9. Listen to the cheering hangers-on, that’s woken them up
10. That’s got the opposition worried – keep it up
11. Take a well-earned rest for half-time, it’s only 1-1. We can do this !!
12. Come out for the second half still fired up and continue with those slick passes and crunching tackles
13. Add a few heavy showers to put an extra spin on the ball
14. Don’t blame the ‘keeper for letting one slip past him – he has already made several great stops
15. Keep up the pressure but watch those free kicks – the goals aren’t that tall
16. Give away a silly penalty & watch them send the ‘keeper the wrong way
17. Keep the heads up and keep battling
18. Don’t be disheartened at the final whistle, this was as good as any win
19. Appreciate the generous words of the opposition manager
20. Wait for the manager & Chairman to pay up the game bonus
