There was an expectant mood from the football enthusiasts who braved the cold damp English weather to cheer on the mighty blue. All too often this winter the beautiful game has been held hostage by the inclement conditions. A big round of applause must go to the grounds man who having relocated the keys to his lawnmower was able to give the surface a short back and sides before proceedings.

Period 1

Wilmslow kicked off the first period, and the game was afoot. Possession was fairly equal the first 5 minutes with both teams looking for the early advantage. Nice early link up play between Miles and Dan exerted early pressure on the Broadheath defence who coped well. Both teams exchanged a couple of half chances before some nice play between Miles and Calvin put a through pass to Dan who with great movement and confidence belying his age put a hard shot through the keeper from the angle. 1-0 the Albion. This was the signal for 6 minutes of pressure from Albion who forced the Broadheath goalkeeper into a string of fine saves. Then 13 mins into the period a breakaway from Broadheath resulted in a well placed shot into the corner of the Albion goal giving Keeper Nathan little chance of saving. Undeterred, Albion went straight back at Broadheath with Sam coming close with a low drive that the keeper steered round the post. Lots of effort by both teams in the last few minutes saw little chances created at either end. The young Ref blew the whistle to bring to a close the entertaining first period.

Period 2

In keeping with the sporting and fair policy that the coaches at Wilmslow employ there was a new look about the Wilmslow team that started the second period. Bradon at left back, Alex in midfield and Will at the front. This new team took a few minutes to settle, which gave Broadheath a chance to come into the game and Nathan did well to parry a long shot away from the goal for the defence to clear. Dan who was playing his last game for the Albion before his big money move to Oz looked determined to leave with a bang and some good play between him and Will led to a number of chances being created. Alex also had a good try zing across the keeper just wide of the far post. All the crowd watching felt it only had to be a matter of time before this entertaining brand of football yielded results. Sure enough another attack involving Dan and Alex gave the alert Will the chance to drill a great low shot from 10 metres out across the goalkeeper in off the post. 2-1 Albion. This was the signal for Albion to change keepers and on came Patrick to mind the Albion goal. There then followed some more good play from Wilmslow creating some chances which on other days would of gone in. Things were looking good for Wilmslow then, just before the end of the period an opportunistic long looping shot took Patrick by surprise and dipped over his outstretched hands under the crossbar and into the net A sporting round of applause went out to the Broadheath lad for his effort that tied the game at 2 apiece. More pressure at both ends yielded no more goals this period and the whistle was blown for the end of a very entertaining second period.

Period 3

Anticipation was the watch word at the start of the third period as our now quite chilly crowd cheered on the young sportsmen. Sam was now centre back filling in for the very capable Tom. Ian was back on at right back and Miles was also rejoining the fray. The best move of the day saw Miles pass the ball out to a calling Ian on the wing who put in a very inviting cross to Will who headed the ball towards the Broadheath goal. As time in the final period passed it developed into a similar pattern to the second. Some good defending at the back, keeping Broadheath chances to a minimum. Enterprising football from the forwards creating a lot of chances that Broadheath were able to keep out through solid defending and some good saves from the young lad in goal.
The tension was mounting. Then, just as the crowd, who had by now nibbled through the outer layer of their gloves were resigning themselves to a draw and talk in the coffee shop of the one that got away another good move turned the game.
Patrick launched a good kick to the wing for Will who brought the ball under control pushed the ball past the defender and crossed to a charging Dan who fooled the defence with a nice side pass to Miles who neatly slotted the ball into the corner of the net past the despairing Broadheath goalkeeper.

This certainly warmed up the crowd and cheered up the team. The last few minutes of this very exiting game saw a great effort from the Broadheath # 7 crack a shot over the bar that even an adult striker would have been happy with. Wilmslow pressed for another chance before the referee brought proceedings to a very satisfactory end.

M.O.M was Dan who’s tireless energy and inspiration up front will be greatly missed by the team. We will also miss his friendly sprit. Good luck to Dan and his family in their new adventure in Australia.
