9 February 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 3 - 5 away win against Burtonwood (08/02/2009)
A depleted Albion 13 made their way over The Thelwell Viaduct for a friendly fixture against Burtonwood who look keen to join the Cheshire Veterans League next year.
On a hard but playable surface Albion made their now customary slow start and went behind to a header from the Burtonwood forward who was unmarked at the far post. Within minutes though, some great play from Carden saw his shot blocked and as it fell to the feet of Griffith some 30 yards out he drove it back in at the keepers goal. The sheer pace and curl on the ball meant that the keeper could only parry it into his own net. A first goal for the club and what a way for Griffith to open his account.
Several chances then fell to Royle making a rare start and a mixture of good keeping and poor finishing kept the scores level. That was until Barber received a pass from Carden and he drove it low into the corner of the net. 2-1 and half time came.
The second half began with Albion dominant from the start. Salt returning from a lengthy injury, Fenton making a rare appearance and the ever reliable Price were keeping the centre of the Midfield ticking over nicely. Carden and Goodwin were both making excellent runs down the wings and were linking well with their respective full backs, Griffith and Brindley. Indeed it wasn't long before some nice passing led to Griffith finding himself on the edge of the box in a shooting position. Again his trusty foot despatched the ball into the corner of the net. 3-1 to the Albion. Royle was continuing to break at pace and on one such move, leaving his marker face down in the mud, he sprinted clear to cross for Barber to notch his second of the game. Minutes later Royle rolled a ball into the path of right back Brindley who cracked the ball in low and hard. Another player opening his account fro the Albion. At 5-1 Royle chose to mix the play up and with 10 minutes to go some of the wannabe centre forwards were given permission to goal hunt.
A blatant offside and an extremely contentious penalty in the last 3 minutes was a consolation, albeit too little too late for Burtonwood. Final score 5-3 to Albion.
