U9Bs Bounce Back - first win of the year

2 February 2009

Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 6 - 2 home win against Ashton on Mersey JFC U9 (31/01/2009)

Early pressure from Ashton resulted in an early corner for them which caused us difficulties in defence trying to clear it, we left their attacker with a clear header onto goal which luckily for us went wide….. an early warning.

We were starting off well and a great early run from Rohan down the wing and a great cross from him was sadly just in front of Sol who tried desperately to reach the ball but soon after we again faced a corner which we couldn’t deal with but again escaped any punishment.

Nathan was certainly up for this game and was putting in some great mazy runs which caused the midfield and defence all sorts of problems.

A short period of scrappy play ended with the ball breaking free to Dan who delivered a great ball back into the penalty area, a high bounce meant that the only way Nathan could control it was to us his shoulder and give away a hand ball.

With the pressure being applied by both sides a goal was soon to come and luckily for us it was Nathan who seized the chance, a great surging run and a fantastic strike beat the goal keeper. 1-0 Albion

Both teams continued to fight for this game and our nerves were calmed shortly afterwards when after a goal mouth scramble Rohan popped up on the edge of the penalty area to strike the ball high over the keeper and into the roof of the net. 2-0 Albion

15 mins: Wilmslow Albion 2 - Ashton on Mersey 0

Third goal for Wilmslow, Sol made a great break down  the  right and delivered  a simple pass to Nathan who calmly put the ball into back of net. 3-0

Only minutes later Nathan could have had Wilmslows fourth and his hat trick. Again another fine cross from Sol beat the keeper and it was harder for Nathan to miss the target than to score bur somehow miss it he did and the ball sailed over the  bar.

Exposed at back for once as an Ashton player beat Dan but James made a good  save putting ball out from corner, from this we again struggled to defend and this time were punished so 3-1.

At this point we started to wonder if this game would go the same way as previous recent games with Albion building up a good lead only for it to be eaten away, and sure enough history looked like repeating itself with another goal for Ashton from  great shot which James couldn’t hold, and a scramble in the goal mouth saw the ball poked in to make the game 3-2 to Albion

However this time we showed better fighting spirit and carried on battling,

Long range shot from Sam from just inside the Ashton half was only just saved by the Ashton goalkeeper.

Hand ball by Ashton defender gave a penalty which Dan stepped up to take, a great shot but hit the inside of the post and shot across the goal and was then put out for a corner. Sam took the corner which was volleyed in by Sol to make the score 4-2.

30 mins: Wilmslow Albion 4 - Ashton on Mersey 2

It was during this period that the opposing fans started to show a stunning lack of knowledge of human anatomy as cries of hand ball could be heard with alarming regularity

Fifth goal came from a throw in from Dan to sol who took the ball past a couple of defenders before slotting the ball calmly past the keeper. 5-2 Albion

With the game now safe a few more substitutions were made, on occasions this led to mix ups with players not used to the positions, but its got to be worth doing to ensure they get used to playing in different positions and more game time.

Final goal to Sol, yet more great running by Nathan and a great shot only parried by the keeper and Sol put the rebound past the keeper. 6-2 Albion

With that the final whistle blew, and a great win for the boys.

45 mins: Wilmslow Albion 6 - Ashton on Mersey 2

This was a fine team performance with all of them playing their parts, worthy of mention must be James in goals for numerous great saves and real bravery in diving down at players feet.

Josh Wheeler and Dan as ever solid in defence and really starting to work as a unit, always there to help each other and provide back up.

Nathan, whatever you had for breakfast make sure you get some more, the runs today and the way you pressured the opposition was great.
