19 January 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 2 - 1 away defeat to Bollington (18/01/2009)
A break in the terrible Winter weather allowed this eagerly awaited top of the table clash, between Bollington FC and Wilmslow Albion Veterans, to take place this Sunday at a Windy Mary Dendy pitch.
Albion needing the victory to keep them in contention for the Div.2 title, fielded a strong team with a view to stifling the Bollington midfield. Bollington, boasting an unbeaten record this season, and assisted by the wind, soon laid siege to the Albion defence and were unlucky not to score in the first 15 minutes. A resolute Albion defence held out and whilst Albion weren't creating much, they were certainly frustrating the Bollington team with their breaking up of the play.
Indeed it took a free kick from the edge of the area, precisely curled into the top corner of the goal by Bollington's star player Andy Atkinson, to break the deadlock after 25 minutes. Ten minutes later it was 2-0 when a misplaced defensive header was greeted with joy by Atkinson who duly despatched the ball into the goal.
Half time saw the turnaround and with the wind behind Albion now, the game changed. Altering tactics to a more attacking formation Albion pressed forward looking to pull a goal back. It looked like it had happened when a beautiful cross was headed goalbound by Dawson only for the crossbar to keep the ball out. Lifted by this, Albion pressed Bollington back for the best part of the half. Only on rare occasions did Bollington trouble Albion but there defence was certainly holding out well.
With time running out Albion switched to a 3-4-3 formation and were rewarded five minutes from time when Royle fired a low hard shot into the Bollington goal from outside the box. Even with four minutes injury time, Albion couldn't muster an equaliser and conceded defeat to Bollington in a hard faught but fair game that set a good example for the Cheshire Veterans League. Bollington will surely go on to win the Division and its now in Albions hands to follow them into Div.1.
