18 January 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U9 Panthers 2 - 4 home defeat to Unicorn Athletic JFC U9 Hurricanes (17/01/2009)
Wilmslow Albion started off brightly enough on a slightly soft playing surface.
Albion got off to a perfect start with Sol scoring in the first minute of the game from a lovely assist by Sam. Josh M then had a long powerful run down the flank but was outnumbered by the defence which followed a scrabble just in front of Unicorns goal area but unfortunately Albion were unable to get a good foot to the ball.
A good shot on goal by Rohan from a pass by Sol failed to find the target due to some good defensive play by the Unicorns. Sloppy Albion defensive play very nearly resulted in Unicorn equalising. Some neat interplay between Dan, Rohan and Sol was demonstrated and Albion was definitely dominating play.
James came out of goal to make a brave great save and deny what we thought could have been Unicorns equaliser.
Piercing passes by Dan and battling play by Dan, Sol and Rohan saw one way traffic heading towards the Unicorn goal area but good Unicorn defensive thwarted Albion’s efforts.
Sol got taken down and Albion was awarded a free kick by the Referee which Dan took a screamer of a free kick only to be denied of a goal by good Unicorn defending. He then managed to immediately get a second shot on target but the ball was deflected.
Some battling play by Josh W, Josh M and Dan made Albion totally dominant in defence. A corner kick by Unicorn deflected by Dan ensured Unicorn didn’t equalise. Just seconds before the end of the first period Finn came on to replace Josh M.
The opening minutes of the second period seemed to set the ominous tone for the rest of this period with Albion dominating and creating a number of good scoring chances, but failing to convert them into goals.
Firstly a lovely in-swinging corner by Sam which failed to get a foot to it by the Albion attack. Josh W made a powerful run through the defence tackling and beating two Unicorn defenders only for the ball to be cleared out.
A good pass from Finn saw Sam have a blast at goal but the keeper managed to save it. Sol scored his second goal of the day after being nicely set up by Josh W.
A great volley from the corner by Finn hit the post which we all thought had gone in. Half way through the second period Harrison came on for Rohan and he showed a powerful run through the defence followed by good deflection of a Unicorn shot. Albion then seemed to take their foot off the pedal which allowed Unicorn to score their first goal.
We then saw some nice defending by Sam and Josh W just outside Albion’s goal area.
Albion’s defence had to work hard towards the end of the second period and James had to pull off some great saves but Albion had definitely dominated the majority of the game so far.
After being set up nicely by a corner from Finn, Sam fired a left foot blast net bound shot which cannoned over the cross bar. Josh M who had come back on for an injured Harrison made several strong challenges and almost claimed a goal from a long range shot that fell wide of Unicorns goal.
Having come on as sub Nathan displayed a powerful rundown the left wing but was unfortunately brought down. Josh W showed some great defending with Sam and Nathan combining well with some slick passing in midfield.
Sam set up an accurate corner kick right in front of goal but Albion were unable to get onto the end of it and it was quickly deflected by the Unicorn defence. Albion’s defence loosing concentration saw Unicorn equalise with their second goal. Some changes were made, Josh W back in defence and Harrison in midfield.
Wilmslow Albion seemed to come back to life in the third period and Albion had some great chances on goal but were so unlucky not to score.
After a scrabble 25 yards in front of Unicorns goal area, Unicorn scored their third goal making the score 3-2 to Unicorns. Rohan swapped with Sam and went up front. Despite being one goal down Albion still continued to dominate the match but unfortunately one minute before the final whistle was blown Unicorn tapped in their fourth goal.
Unfortunately for Albion their winning streak was spoiled.
