14 January 2009 Match report for Wilmslow Town U13 Cougars 7 - 3 away defeat to AFC Urmston Meadowside U13 Kestrels (11/01/2009) Having conceded two goals in the first 6 minutes Albion had an uphill task for their first outing of 2009. Excellent saves by keeper Stobart and good defensive work by Williamson and others steadied Albion. Soon they were putting more pressure on the Kestrels, with strong midfield play from Sumner and Pindar and some fine attacking runs from Storey and Whatson.
Albion went 3-0 down against the run of the play, A few minutes later Norman sprinted down the left wing, passed to Storey who neatly knocked the ball into the net. Albion were unlucky not to add another before half-time, Pindar and Norman having been foiled by the combined efforts of some solid Urmston defence and the sticky mud.
After half-time Albion quickly went 4-1 down, but came back strongly, Perry’s low shot forcing a corner. . Their pressure was rewarded two minutes later when Gardner put in a low swerving shot from the left that the Kestrels keeper deflected into the goal. The teams were evenly-matched for the rest of the half, Kestrels adding two goals and Albion grabbing one, Storey slotting safely home after Perry’s deft turn and pass.
Final score: Kestrels 7 Albion 3.
All in all an encouraging performance from Albion on a difficult heavy pitch that didn’t suit their style of play. Without those two early goals the final result could have been very different.
