U10's A victorious in mud-bath - soothing Wilmslow Town followers nerves

22 December 2008

Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 0 - 3 away win against Unicorn Athletic JFC U10 Comets (20/12/2008)

Albions started off with Alex, Tom & Ian at the back, Calvin and Miles in the middle and Will up front. Playing some great football, they peppered the Unicorn goal with shots which were generally either wide or saved. Will, Miles, Ian and Alex had shots during the period, but only a smart turn and shot high into the net by Will broke the deadlock after around 10 minutes of play. Comets rarely threatened the Albion defence, and the only surprise of the period was that Albion weren't further ahead at the interval.

In the second period, Will, Tom & Ian were rested and Dan, Sam & Braden were on. Dan quickly got into the action with a headed effort and then Miles and Sam had shots just wide of the post. Unicorn were having their best spell of the game and Alex cleared a shot just under the bar. Braden was doing some tidy work and looking for a shooting chance to secure a huge scoring bonus from his dad! The period concluded with a long shot from Alex which needed a great save from the keeper and Miles heading just over the bar. With the score still at 1-0 whereas 4-0 would have reflected the balance of play, the Albion crowd were getting nervous going into the final period.

In the final third, Calvin, Miles and Alex were initially rested and within a minute or two of the restart a high shot from Dan floated over the keepers head for a welcome 2-0 scoreline allowing the Albion coaches and supporters to breathe easy! Will, Ian, Miles & Calvin all had further shots which were either saved or just wide, but the game was nicely rounded off with a great free-kick from Miles in the top-corner for 3-0.

All-in-all some excellent football was played by Albion but we got scant reward for the number of attempts on goal and on a different day this game could easily have ended up at a much higher scoreline. The Comets didn't threaten our goal as much as they did at Lacey Green a few weeks ago (Patrick had only one attempt to save all game) and all things considered this was a comfortable win with the coaches able to experiment with different formations such as Dan & Sam in midfield which is good for the overall team development.

Importantly we are keeping the pressure on Urmston hoping they drop points somewhere before our final head-to-head with them which will determine the destination of the title this season.

Man of the match: Everyone played well today, but the MoM was awarded to Will Harney for holding the front line and getting the all-important break-through goal.

Match reporter: Marc "does anyone read these reports?" Harney.
