U10's A beat Jack Frost - and Unicorn !

6 December 2008

Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 5 - 1 home win against Unicorn Athletic JFC U10 Comets (06/12/2008)

Unexpectedly given the role, our roving reporter was kept busy due to end to end football, with both teams contributing to an exciting fixture.

The Unicorn Comets unexpectedly scored first with a long range shot defeating a capless Nathan in the low winter sun. This was despite a composed start from an Albion defence looking strong and providing a firm foundation for the team. Both Ian and Braden were playing fluently on the right and left respectively and Tom was in form as usual in his central role.

Miles and Kalvin were kept busy early on with the Comets very competitive in the first period. Will was sharp upfront but Miles scored the equaliser with a stunning long range free kick. Will forced a fine save and Tom missed narrowly with a header but at times Albion were rather too anxious and rushed in their play. However they played some very attractive football at times and Nathan looked comfortable between the sticks making a number of confident saves.

Ian and Calvin took a rest for Sam and Alex at the start of the second period. Nathan reacted quickly to nullify a long range clearance from the Comets. Albion began to turn up the pressure winning a number of corners - the pressure told on the Unicorn keeper and Will took advantage to make it 2-1.

The Unicorns were still in the hunt and Sam made a telling interception to thwart a dangerous attack. Braden was growing in confidence and this was another strong performance from him. Sam was a handful on the right and Alex was beginning to find his feet. Miles was competing for everything in midfield and Tom was unbeatable in defence. Patrick came on for Nathan and was in the action right away tipping a shot over the bar.

Albion broke from the corner with Alex breaking down the right. He put in a dangerous shot from the right which the goalkeeper under pressure from Will dropped and the ball rolled over the line - 3-1 at the end of the second.

Braden and Will took a rest at the start of the third and the Unicorns began to look a beaten side. There was more room in midfield and Sam took full advantage with countless shots on goal. Ian continued to have a strong game with some good defending and probing runs. The Comets had to defend a number of corners and on one occasion could not deal with the physical presence of Tom who scored the fourth goal.

Patrick had a number of clearances to make but it was really one way traffic at this stage. Braden and Will were soon back on and Will it was who finished the game with Albion's fifth goal.

There was much to applaud in this game and the coaching staff must be pleased with progress after the defeats by Urmston and Wilmslow Sports. The team looked very balanced to-day and all played well. While Sam deservedly won man of the match the disciplined performances of Ian and Braden early on, supported by Tom, were key. Will had a very strong game throughout and Alex grew in confidence as the game wore on. Both keepers played well and Miles and Calvin were as reliable as ever.

Fenton and Boyd now have a lot of options available to them. They have a solid defence with attacking options. There is grit and skill in abundance in midfield. There is flair and elusive running upfront. With more composure on the ball and the recognition that not every pass has to go forward and produce a goal the team will grow and still be capable of winning the league.
