24 November 2008 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 4 - 2 home win against Plumley (23/11/2008)
A blustery, wet afternoon at Lacey Green saw Wilmslow Albion take on Plumley Celtic from the division above in the first round of the Chehire Veterans Cup.
Straight from the start, Wilmslow took the game to Plumley and carrying on from the week before, the combination of Price, Arrowsmith and S Jackson proved to be more than a handful for the opposition defence with some lovely pass and move play.
With poor conditions underfoot, both teams tried to play attractive football when permitted but for much of the first half the game was taken to Plumley who defended resolutely. The deadlock was finally broken after half an hour when a delightful cross from Arrowsmith saw the in-form Barber rise and head home from close range. A deserved lead for Albion who kept pushing forward in search of a second goal.
This nearly came when a superb crossfield ball from S Jackson fell into the path of Carden on the left side. Bearing down on goal and shooting, the ball went agonisingly wide of the post.
Unfortunately half time arrived too soon for Albion and they failed to extend the lead any further.
A different Plumley Celtic came out for the second half and after 5 minutes, a neat dummy and shot from their forward on the edge of the box, saw the ball in the back of the Albion net despite the dive from keeper King.
A resurgent Plumley then took up the fight and turned their game around completely. When a ball in from the wing was missed by all, the Plumley forward stabbed the ball home to give his team the lead.
Albion needed to dig deep and with conditions worsening Manager Royle introduced himself into the game. The introduction of fresh legs up front soon made a difference and when Royle received the ball on the left hand side he turned and beat his man and then sent a cross into the waiting Barber who scored his second of the game. 2-2 and Albion were back in it and with the applied rotation of their substitutes, they were back into their stride. Indeed the fitness was to play a major part in the game as the final whistle went plunging the game into extra time.
Albion started well and put the pressure on Plumley from the start and when the Plumley defender miscontrolled the ball in his own six yard box, there was Royle to slide in and stab the ball over the line.
Albion maintained the pressure and with the back four looking solid and the midfield working hard it looked like there was no way back for Plumley.
Royle again received the ball on the left and after beating his man again bore down on goal and nearly repeated his Berbatov moment from a previous game. This time the defender denied him the dressing room bragging rights.
Wilmslows pressure continued. Arrowsmith firing one just over, Salt heading against the post and Affleck shooting narrowly wide.
The game was over though when with only minutes left, Royle received the ball near the half way line. He turned, raced towards goal and fired in a low shot that beat the keeper but not the post. The rebound came out to a pack of Albion predators and the on-hand Hall capped a fine display by slotting the ball home.
Albion now meet Warrington Grange on 4th Jan in the next round.
