Veterans leap - to victory

Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 1 - 0 home win against Bedians (16/11/2008)

A fine day at Lacey Green saw Albion take on Bedians, a team only one place below them in the league table.

Bedians started the game with 10 men due to satnav problems on one of their team vehicles. Until the late arrival via Marple of their missing player, they managed to thwart an Albion offensive for the first 15 minutes and indeed were unlucky not to take the lead when a long clearance upfield caught the Albion defence a little static. A scuffed shot by their forward who had broken clear going wide of the Albion goal.

Albion could have taken the lead shortly after when a fine take down and strike from 15 yards by Albions leading scorer Barber, rocked the Bedians crossbar with all beaten. Albion continued the pressure, and some nice play on the right side by Price, Arrowsmith and Jackson saw Albion come close on several more occasions.

Then came Bedians big chance. A long clearance was chased again and with the Albion defence slow to clear, a desperate sliding lunge by Wilson saw the Bedians forward felled in an instant. Without hesitation or complaint from Wilmslow, the ref awarded the penalty. This was duly fired wide of the diving keeper Kings right post.

Albion took heed from this warning and within minutes some great play from Arrowsmith set up Jackson for the cross. The deflected cross hung in the air and like a Highland Salmon leaping against the tide, Barber rose between two defenders to head home from close range. 6 goals in 6 games for the Albion striker.

Half time arrived and refreshments were taken and tactics discussed. 5 changes by Albion at the halfway point and an attempt to tire the resilient Bedians squad. But it was Bedians who came out with the more positive start and indeed for most of an unremarkable 2nd half it was the away team who had the better of the game.

Two notable opportunities came their way from direct free kicks and for the last 15 minutes Bedians the Albion pinned in their own half.

A fine performance from both teams but credit to Bedians who could surely benefit from having a larger squad on the match days.

Albion welcome their old foes from Div 1, Plumley Celtic FC next Sunday in the Veterans Cup Preliminary round.
