2 November 2008 Match report for Wilmslow Town U10 Panthers 2 - 4 home defeat to AFC Urmston Meadowside U10 Arrows (01/11/2008)
First Period Few home supporters on the touchline on this bright sunny autumn day with the big test of the season against tough opposition from Urmston.
First period kicked off with Ian getting straight in on the action and it was clear from the off that both teams were taking it seriously.
An early corner from Wilmslow continues the pressure but despite good work and strong passing particularly from Miles who was also communicating well with his team mates and setting a great example in how we want the boys to be calling for the ball, we were unable to get players into the Urmston penalty area to finish off the moves.
A series of long throws from Tom put pressure on Urmston, one in particular leading to a great shot from Alex which unfortunately went just over the bar.
Urmston are however a very strong team and were able to quickly turn the play against us and apply the pressure and all our team had to stay alert to the constant threat but so far we were keeping them at bay.
We couldn’t keep them out all the time I’m afraid and a great corner from Urmston caught our defence napping and at this level we cannot allow this to happen and Urmston capitalized to go 1-0 ahead.
We were not down hearted however and Dan and Alex took the fight to Urmston with strong runs and constant pressure on them.
Once again though we had to stay focused and despite a good save from Patrick, Urmston kept up the pressure and soon went 2-0 up.
Sadly despite us playing well we didn’t seem to be getting any breaks and this together with a good performance from the Urmston keeper meant that at the end of the period we were still 2-0 down.
Second period A substitution saw Dan replaced by Will who slotted into his defensive role, and he was soon into the action as Urmston came flying at us and kept the pressure on. After a midfield battle Albion got a corner taken by Alex and the header by Tom went wide of the target.
We started to show our strength of passing with good interplay between Miles and Calvin in midfield and our boys seemed determined to try and stay in contact and if possible claw their way back into contention.
Will was making his mark putting in strong runs from defence up the left wing, with one shot sadly fading in strength before it could find the mark, but as before it was proving that unicorn were better at taking their chances and after a quick break they went 3-0 up.
To our credit we carried on fighting and it’s wrong to single out individual players as they were all trying their hardest, and eventually our efforts had to pay off, Alex put a great ball through to Miles and at last we had a goal for our efforts 1-3.
Straight from the kick off the whole complexion of the game changed, a long ball from tom found Alex who slotted the ball coolly past the goalie to go 2-3. Albion were suddenly firing on all cylinders and there was a touch of panic not only in the Urmston team but also in the increasingly frantic shouts from the Urmston supporters.
The whistle from the ref ended the period and set the scene for a real final period showdown.
Third period. This saw the debut for Nathan in goals and what a game to start in, a real baptism of fire because despite strong defensive work from Ian, and Tom he was still kept busy.
Dan made his return to the field full of energy as usual and never stopped running and chasing every opportunity.
But sadly one lapse of concentration saw Urmston strike first and go 4-2 ahead, but Nathan was putting in some great saves and certainly keeping us in the game.
More tries on goal from Wilmslow were either just wide, just over or produced great saves from Urmston.
Sadly though it was not to be our day and the game finished with the scoreline of Albion 2 Urmston 4.
This was one of those games when we just couldn’t seem to score despite having plenty of chances and when you meet a team that has quality like Urmston we need to get the goals, on the day Urmston took all their chances and came out on top,
Tom was made man of the match.
