2 November 2008 Match report for Wilmslow Town Veterans 4 - 1 home win against Prestfield (02/11/2008)
Wilmslow Albion needed to get back to winning ways against bottom of the table Prestfield in their first game at the Lacey Green complex.
A tight first 25 minutes saw both teams cancel themselves out with only one diving save by Wilmslow's Keeper King to show for both teams efforts. However on the half hour Wilmslow's leading scorer Barber received the ball after some nice passing and drilled a low shot past the Prestfield Keeper from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.
Undaunted, Prestfield counter attacked and following some nice football and good pressure, won a corner. The resulting corner was hit long to the back post and headed back across goal where after a crowded leap by four players, the Prestfield striker prevailed and headed the visitors level.
With half time approaching Wilmslow upped the pace of the game and when Arrowsmith received the ball on the right wing, rather than cross to the waiting forwards, he chose to run at the defence and lash an unstoppable strike past the keeper from the corner of the penalty area. 2-1 to the Albion at half time.
After an uneventful first 15 minutes of the second half, Player Manager Royle received the ball on the left wing. Running at the defenders to the byline he somehow managed to produce a Berbatov like piece of skill to clear the defence and from the narrowest of angles drilled the ball home.
Wilmslow now had the bit between their teeth and with fresh legs aplenty, had the better of a tiring but resilient Prestfield. After several offside decisions against him, Royle finally beat the trap from his own half running on to a superb through ball by man of the match Affleck. Taking the ball round an advancing keeper, he rolled in his 2nd and Albions 4th.
With more close chances from Albion, S Jackson curling just wide and Royle being denied his hat-trick by the keepers fingers and the crossbar, the game was over.
This league is about a squad of 16 and Prestfield will know only too well that despite a valiant effort, they need a bigger selection of players every game.
Next, Albion take on Bedians at Lacey Green on 16th November.
